I am trying to study the art of breeding well before practicing such. I read in many places to study the genetics of the breed. Where does one find such information in a more general sense. I understand the reading of bloodlines of a particlar hound. But where do I find a historical genetic perspective of the basset hound?

AKC's studbooks are a good resource, and there are databases for the breed, where you can look up ancestry on a basset of interest.

You will probably also be interested in learning more about the genetics of purebred dogs in general, which apply to all breeds. Here is an excellent e-mail list for discussion of genetics issues affecting purebred dogs. Various individual breeds are also discussed, from time to time. :)

Milissa, are there basset breeders in your area who would be willing to mentor you? I know you've talked about showing in conformation, but I'm wondering if you have anyone to give you hands-on assistance.

I have many breeder friends who are more than willing to help and support me as I work my way through showing and, hopefully -- one day -- breeding a nice litter. I'd be lost without them!
