Bad Breath

Does anyone have issues with their bassets raunchy breath? We have two bassets and our newest pups mouth smells like rotten meat. This has been going on since we got him. Even his puppy breath was extra pungent. We originally asked the vet about it around 8 weeks old and they chalked it up to puppy breath. I think he may be trapping food in his lip folds? It is especially ripe when he wakes up in the morning. I just want to be able to give my little ham bone some kisses and lately, it is NOT happening. Little dude needs a breath mint.

Also, I brush his teeth, he gets beef knuckle bones, is on a raw diet and has access to fresh water.
I'm not sure why he's so bad - bad breath usually stems from bad teeth/gum infection but at his age, that's unlikely. He is eating stools because that behaviour will make his breath foul

Looking at him (wonderful expression) he's not overly endowed with skin folds (good at that age) so I'd not go to trapped food in his case.

I don't have an answer to be honest, other than to check he isn't stool-eating!!

ps He's a nice puppy, lovely bone and his front looks good from what I can see. Good eyes too with none of the exaggerated haw so often seen in the basset today and which in the UK at any rate, is trying to be corrected.
Not sure about the bad breath but he is great looking hound!
Thank you all :) His breath is starting to improve and we have found 2 baby canine teeth have fallen out. I am hoping to chalk this up to teething. One can hope, right?

Hope so (teeth).

I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO want your puppy. He's exactly my sort and if I lived where you are, you'd have to lock him up

I'd love to know his breeding - you can PM me if you don't want to put it up here.
Agree F.M., he's gorgeous.
Good to hear breath is improving, have heard teething can cause bad breath, should imagine everyone's is not at their best first thing!
Great looking pup! dunno why either... but glad to read it is getting bettah.
Sherman is from Bassets of Hood Canal in Washington. Sire is Maple Streets K9 Crunchies and Dam is Quincy's Midnight Rose.

Interesting - I think that vid. I found with the two Bassets wagging their tails in sinc, were from the Maple Street kennels and on checking I see there's a line back to mine!! Plus other UK-bred hounds. So I'm recognising a type :D
Yes, the cute basset pups wagging video is hers ;) Very cool! Sherman's grandpa, Maple Street Hershey's Hugs just received his AKC championship this year too. I'd love to see some pics of your dogs FranksMum!

Sadly all our home-breds are now little shadows /stars in the sky. Frankie, who does go back to mine, just one line is related to my avatar bitch (her brother) - she's UK Ch. Verulam Morgan le Fay (bred and imported into the UK from Canada when we came back).

This is Frankie, at just over 4 months, after he came to us. He has a lot of Italian in him, on his mother's side too. Quite an international pedigree - and rather lighter in colouring than my dark-tricolors.

I don't know how to multi-post photos so here's another of those we brought home to the UK with us, plus one who was bred back here.

My boy has stinky breath ! we rescued him a year ago nearly, the plaque build up on his teeth was quite significant already, damage already done kind of thing.... he gets chews and I try to brush his teeth but he hates it.
Beautiful dogs franksmum! I just found the culprit today. I'm thinking it's a bacterial infection. Yuck, it's so stinky and on both sides. Have a msg into the vet. I just hope it's not a chronic condition.

Oooh yes, that certainly wouldn't help!! Hopefully, even if it just means you wipe that area with diluted Hibiscrub, especially after a meal, you can keep on top of that!
The vet called back. I'm picking up some topical antibiotics today. Conveniently I work at a local (human) hospital so I can bring hibiclens home.
Lip fold pyderma Saliva and gung gets caught in the lip fold an you have that dead fish breath, Daily multiple clean with acne cleaner with benzoyl peroxide can usual keep it in check. With Mariah However we had to Have surgery on both side to remove the fold and voila problem solved "Amber" - Cocker Spaniel with Lip Fold Pyoderma

bad breath comes from the sagging jowls holding saliva and getting bacteria that smell, it is normal according to my research but I am still trying to find out if there is anything that i can do about it. Brushing last about as long for dogs as it does for us and i m not sure that much brushing is good for a pup
