Hi everyone,

I have a problem. My kids adore Libby, but they are angry because Libby does her business in a high traffic area of the yard, the playground, go figure  . I can't always see when she goes to the bathroom because she no longer makes when I go out with her. If I do, she just follows me or sits by my feet quietly, a complete waste of time. She'll pee, but not poop. Anyway, I was wondering if dividing the yard would be a good idea. So that Libby and the kids have their own space, that way if I see that she's gone to the bathroom on her side, she can be invited to theirs.

**This is completely off topic, but for those new basset owners, like me, who are having night troubles with their puppies, about two months ago, I put a comfortable dog bed inside of Libby's crate. Ever since, she doesn't whine to go outside, sleeps all night with no accidents. I don't know why, but she won't make on that pillow. That pillow gave me back my sleep. She's four-and-a-half months old now. The funny part is that if the pillow's not in her crate, then she'll whine all night. I hope that's not a bad thing :( .

How old are your kids?

I know I'm going to sound like a crotchety old man here, aplogies in advance.

I shared yard work with my siblings, including poop patrol, from 7 or 8 years old until I moved out of my folks place.

I have a 7 yr old son, and a 5yr old daughter. She nags the most. But you gave me a great idea. It's time for them to help out a bit.

I think dogs have a natural instinct to not soil their sleeping area.

That's what I thought until Libby came along. My golden never did that in his area, he would go in other places. But Libby doesn't mind sleeping in her wee wee, or right next to a turd, let alone eat it. I used to put large towels in her crate, but there is something different about this pillow. I think it's the fact that it belonged to my kids.

I have a seperate area for my two, but they are allowed in the rest of the back yard when I'm home. I also give them free range in the winter, so the rest of the yard does get a little messy. They mostly go in their pen, but I do find a pile once in a while in the back yard.

This is funny that you mentioned this today. When I came home last night, one of them left a "present" at the back door.

My husband and I are going to divide the yard. It's better for her to have her own area and little comfy house back there. Sometimes I have to go out for a couple of hours and I don't like the idea of leaving her in her crate all that time holding it if we can provide her with her own space. Normally, I take her everywhere with me, but there are places which unfortunately aren't pet friendly.
