Hi. Wednesday night Emma cried when she tried to poop. Then again Thursday morning. I took her to the vet Thursday. she wasn't constipated, no anal gland issues, everything seemed fine. No blockages. He suspected she hurt or strained her back....although she didn't really react much to him pushing on it.

Well, she's pooped a few times...but with my help...holding her and talking to her "it's okay...good girl"...and then I had to actually help pull the poop out. It's like when she hunches and tries to push, that's where the pain comes in. Now she hasn't peed since yesterday...it's been about 11 hours.

I'm just devastated and going crazy. Have any of you seen this??? She's holding her tail really weird too...straight down and somewhat bent...it's hard to describe. Otherwise though, she seems fine... I mean...there are no other symptoms. she eats... she drinks... she wags her tail and gets belly rubs. she's sleeping next to me on the couch now...I've been up all night.

If she doesn't pee in the next 4 hours, I'll call the vet again when they open at 8 a.m. I'm just wondering if any of you have seen anything similar. Oh, he did give me some anti-inflammatory pills that I'm giving her in case it really is a back injury.

It just seems so odd to me...but it does make sense I guess that if the muscles she's using to hunch and push are injured, it would cause her to cry... anyway. Just looking for some reassurance that she'll get past this.

You might consider restricting her activity, which would normally be done in any case, if it were a back or soft tissue injury. If she were my dog and there was no improvement or she seemed to be getting worse, I'd get her right back to the vet for diagnostics. Hope she feels better soon. :)

(And as an aside, check to be sure she's not eating any of the foods that have been recalled.)[/b]
Thanks, Betsy! I did take her to another vet just to make sure. She did a couple of other diagnostic tests and determined the same thing--back injury. So yes, we stopped her from using any stairs. We built her a ramp to go outside to go potty, and I moved her bed to the main floor from upstairs and I sleep on the couch with her next to me on her bed (because she has to be where I am!)

She's getting much better. The 2nd vet gave me more anti-inflammatory medicine that I've been giving her. She poops now without crying (thank GAWD) and her tail is now back up where it's supposed to be.

So scary when something happens and they can't tell us what's wrong.
