Duke has been put on an anti-inflamatory for arthritis. He has it in his left front leg.

Does anyone else have any experience with this? Do they stay on it permanently, or just for flare ups? I forgot to ask the vet.

Duke is 7, and has climbed up and down the stairs, up and off couches until recently. too late! I always felt too mean to not let him jump up on the bed, because he wanted up so BADLY, and now he is paying for my stupidity. Please, don't let your hound jump up or down on anything. it's hard to do, but worth it. Poor Duke

We will all sling drool for poor Duke - not me, I'll rather pray. I'm better to that.

I had my Rottie on Rimadyl for years, it helped a lot - but is supposed to be hard on the stomach.

you could try conkilin (product i sell) (I don't like doing this i don't want anyone thinking i am pushing this stuff so don't feel obligated at all) the senior dog supplement is a natural suppliment that helps with joints. my brothers dog was on anti inflamatories and took her off and is using the suppliment and she is doing as well as she was on the anti inflamotories, and these are all natural. its 34.30 plus shipping and tax where applicable but this should be a two month supply.

I hope your duke gets to feeling like his normal self soon.

We used rimadyl with Willie and with Jake on occasion. I think as long as blood is done periodically most dogs do fine. It helped immensely. Jake used it for his pano when the pain got bad-

As Wendy said, if Duke remains on the med, make sure blood tests are done regularly to check on liver function. Sadie has severe arthritis in her spine. She took Rimadyl for about 1 1/2 years, until her liver showed signs of damage. When that happened, we switched her to a 2nd arthritis med, (can't remember the name off the top of my head) which did not hurt her liver, but it did not relieve her arthritis discomfort. Now, she is on Metacam, which also caused some liver problems, but did wonders for her arthritis. I cannot believe how much better she seems. Because it works so well for her, we decided to keep her on it, along with Denosyl, which helps heal the liver. Her last blood test was good, all liver levels within normal limits.

Spencer takes Rimadyl just for flare-ups of his arthritis. His is milder than Sadie's & he only needs a pill once in awhile. The vet doesn't do regular blood tests on him, because he takes it so infrequently. I think the danger is when they take it daily.

Anti-infamitories for arthitis are likely to be permentent with adjustment made periodically to amount based on pain and other factors. NSAIDs which rimadyl is one are especial hard on a canines stomach and prolonged use can effect liver function. Rimadyl is most often prescribed for dogs because it is gentler on the canine stomach than asprin. Other Nsaids like advil are potential killers. Duramaxx a cox-2 inhibitor and as such less likely gastrointestinal problems but again not without some long term risk
