GRADY HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH ONLY ONE OF HIS EARS. WHEN YOU CAN TOUCH IT YOU CAN HEAR IT SWISH INSIDE. WE HAVE TAKEN HIM TO THE VET BEFORE AND THEY SAID IT WAS EAR MITES. WHEN HE DRAINED HIS EAR IT WAS LIKE A BIG BLOB. GRADY WAS FINE FOR A FEW MONTHS BUT NOW IT HAS STARTED AGAIN. IT IS ONLY ONE EAR THOUGH. IT WILL GET REALLY NASTY LIKE DARK BROWN OR RED. THE OTHER EAR WILL STAY CLEAN. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAS SIMULAR PROBLEMS? wE HAVE USED OINTMENTS AND DROPS BY THE VET BUT HERE WE ARE AGAIN.

It sound like what my Vet calls "Black Wax".Samson gets it and it does seem to be in the one ear more than the other. He told me that using witch hazel to clean his ears out is as good as the wash he sells.Thats what I do but I really have to stay on top of it. I see other people talk about some blue stuff, I was thinking of trying it b/c I was also looking for something that does a better job at ridding this wax. Good luck!

I forgot to mention, I tried the vinigar and alcohol solution some have mentioned and Samson did not like that!!! He doesnt give me too much trouble w/ the witch hazel though.

I used to have lots of problems with ear infections in Emma's ears prior to getting the recipe for the Blue Power Ear treatment solution. Haven't had a problem since. Here's the recipe if you want to give it a try:

Blue Power Ear Treatment

INGREDIENTS:
16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Some bassets have ear canals that seem structured to harbor yeast, and you really have to stay on top of them to prevent infection. Other bassets have ear canals that are more open, and they can go longer between cleanings. Whatever ear product you use, be sure to clean and treat the ears daily until about 2 weeks after the problem resolves. Then, you can slowly try increasing the number of days between cleanings, one day at a time.

Edited to add that if there's dark brown debris in the ear, it's time for another trip to the vet.

I know that this is a dumb question, but where do you get Gentian Violet solution--drug store, natural food store? Many thanks.

I had the same question when I first learned about the Blue Power Ear stuff. Yes, you can get Gentian violet from your local drugstore. I'm from Minnesota, and got it at our local Walgreens. I had to have the pharmacist order it though, as they didn't keep it on the shelf.
