Has any other owners dealt with their basset hound having anemia? My pup is 6 months and I was planning to get him neutered last month but when they did the preliminary blood work it came back low. So they put him on some hook worm medicine because they thought his fecal test could have been a false negative. They also put him on antibiotics and tested him again, did another work up; fecal/urine and blood work but everything comes out negative but his blood work came back worse the second time. It's a little unsettling when the vet can't tell you whats wrong, even though his activity level and eating habits are normal. My vet recommended a dog specialist, so I've made a request for an appointment.

But I guess I'm reaching out to this forum to see if anyone else has dealt with this.

Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid i can't help you re anemia but I do have to pick up on the getting him castrated. Why? If you have to do this at all, bearing in mind the gentle Basset, properly contained, shouldn't need to be castrated other than for medical reasons (prostate problems maybe being high on the list or to have to go into find an undecended testicle which if left, can become cancerous), then please wait (regardless of the anemia) until he's over a year, and the growth plates have closed. That will give you time to reconsider doing this. Even with a less invasive surgery than spaying, it's still surgery with a general anaesthetic and a recovery period.

We had to have two of our old boys castrated when their prostates flared and boy did I regret having it done. They went very 'soft', lost any previous zip (yes I know, Bassets don't have terrier-zip), tended to put on weight if I didn't constantly watch them and adjust their food intake, and grew thick(er) coats. We had no unplanned litters and no, they never got out other than one boy who when we moved, would find the gaps, go through and wait for me to find him so he could show me what needed fixing. Honestly.
