Allergy

Forrest (Gump) will be 9 in October and has been experiencing some sort of allergy every year at this time for the past four years. He starts by chewing his feet and ends up scratching a lot all over. The vet is familiar with Gump to the point that a phone call is all that is needed and medication (steriods) are waiting at the office. I also bathe him with special shampoo. Last year he required a shot...hopefully just the medication will work this year. Has anyone else experienced this? I feel so bad for him, he looks so uncomfortable when it first begins.

Yes, Bugsie has experienced severe allergies since she was about two years old. They began as seasonal, but progressed to year round. I understand how difficult it is for your dog be so uncomfortable and to feel helpless. We tried just about everything, but finally had to go to steroids year-round. Bugsie's allergies are now controlled with a small daily dose of methylprednisolone.

Here are some links with more information about allergies.

At least 3 of the 7 hounds I've had have had significant allergies. One of my current girls, Pearl, is on allergy shots. We had her allergy tested, and she's allergic to cats (we have two) oaks (we have several) pine trees (at least three) and dust mites, and lots of local grasses. Things we can't avoid. About 4 or 5 times a year, I put her on a low dose of prednolisone (sp) for three to four days, and that seems to cool it off for a bit. We have a special shampoo, too, and some sprays to use on the wrinkles on her ankles (that's where it starts). All of my dogs with allergies have been on prednisone-like drugs, either for the long term or the short term, and we haven't had any really ill effects. With Pearl, between that, and baths every two weeks, we manage.
