Our almost 15 year old basset sleeps in her bed in our room. Over the last few months she is waking up most nights at some point either for a drink or to go outside for a pee. This means we're all awake! I feel it's more of a habit rather than her actually needing to pee as we limit her water after 7pm. Our vet gave her tamazepam to see would that regulate her sleep but it didn't work and now she is on Xanex. She has no issues during the day and is placid and friendly, if we could just get her to sleep through the night!
Any ideas of things you've tried that's worked? Was going to get a thundershirt to try? Also melatonin keeps popping up any time I try to research solutions.
Thanks!

I think you are going to find having an oldie can be as exhausting as having a puppy! Can you perhaps get up mid-night to take her out so at least you get the final couple of hours in bed! Please don't limit her water - is she going at it during the night because actually when crated, mine don't have water, or appear to need it as they don't go at the bowls immediately they get up. I'm afraid you may just have to go with it - 15 is a good age for a Basset after all - well done her and you!

I have the same issue with my 14 year old. She is sound asleep until I turn out the lights at night and then she gets up to go out. She can either sleep in my room or in the living room .. and I find if I leave a nightlight on in the living room she will sleep through the rest of the night after that initial foray out.

Sorry but this is normal behavior for old ladies and gents. All four of our bassets did this as they aged. Our latest is 10 and she gets up at 4 every morning unless she has gotten up at 12 or 1 to pee. We have water always available to her and as someone else said-don't limit at this age. She rarely drinks it during that period anyway and if she did all the time I would be worried. I hate to hear medications used for this as well since they are senior dogs. It is what it is. Good luck!

Don't be complainin' too much. At 15 she is getting there. It won't be too much longer until you are posting that you wish she was still there for you to get up to walk. The room will feel pretty empty when that bed is no longer there.

I was far from complaining, simply looking for a little advice on how we can all get a decent night's sleep. Don't worry I've since resolved the problem. And thanks for the info that she won't be with us much longer, very helpful.
