A second basset?

We have a 2-year-old basset named Jean-Luc, whom we adore. We are considering getting a basset puppy, but would love to hear about experiences with a second basset. Jean-Luc may love the companionship, but perhaps he will not like sharing our affection. Any words of wisdom?

I think it's the best decision you can make! As long as you have the time, money & love for a second basset you will be amazed at how great it is.

I truly beleive that bassets (as a rule) love having another basset to play with. I find that I can also get things done easier because they can entertain themselves and give me a break.

Good luck in your search for your new furbaby! Keep us posted.
When Lightning was a puppy, he had such terrible separation anxiety that I finally broke down and adopted a second dog, Stomps. It was the best decision I've ever made in my life. Lightning immediately settled down, Stomps finally had a permanent home for which he thanks me daily, and I have twice the love, affection, hair and drool! Of course only you dan decide if it's best for your situation (for example, I think Stomps ideally would have liked to be an only dog, but he makes do, whereas Lightning had to have someone else with him at all times). But it is rare that someone on this forum regrets getting a second hound.
I have a 2 basset household and I love it. The only thing that would make it better is if I could win the lottery and create myself a basset island. :p They keep each other busy and are very loving to each other. Best pet decision I've ever made.

I agree. Rosco and Cletus would be lost without each other. They are the best of friends.
I also agree! Rusty & Stickers are glued at the hip. They have even adopted our visitor Wilson. Bassets love other Bassets!! :D

Curious as to why you're thinking about another basset hound? I think some people get one, not because they really want another, but because they think their basset wants a playmate. So unless people feel they have this burning desire for another basset, I would discourage one for several reasons. Though not typical of bassets, they may not ever be playmates. Or they may bond so well, hanging out together all the time, that you feel left out. And as others have said, there's double the food and vet bills.

I always got a younger basset whenever I got another one, but then my dogs were older than 2. My feeling is that puppies/young dogs add years to the lives of older dogs. And if not years in quantity, at least it makes them feel and act younger. Although with your 2 year old, a new puppy will probably be like having two puppies. So be prepared.
