Hello,

New to the forum, but have owned Bassets for over 20 years. In the past year, my 6 year old female named Viva, will suddenly start dry heaving, and will lick the edges of our carpet, eat any loose crumbs or dirt on the ground, go outside and eat grass, and even will try and eat sections of carpet. These episodes will come out of nowhere, and she will just be on a mission to eat stuff, to make herself throw up. She will sometimes throw up grass or whatever she gets 4 or 5 times in a row. The only way to really get her to stop is to hold her in a bear hug until she calms down and stops. She has never thrown up while I hold her, and it seems psychological. She goes to the vet regularly, and has been seen for this issue several times and the vet doesn't seem to have a clue what could be causing it. I even just spent $1000 doing every test they could think of, to rule out anything.

The vet said I could consider giving her things like Xanax or Prozac for dogs, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced anything like this condition or having your dog on those medications. She otherwise is in perfect health, weight stable and pretty much always around someone and a very happy and playful Hound dog.

I have also tried different foods and diets aswell, but still it keeps happening I am worried she's doing damage to herself or will eat something in a fit and get caught in her throat or something, not to mention doing tons of damage to my carpets. Any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks

Unfortunately, I only had regular fabric rugs in my house. And then they often broke, and I had to give them to the carpet repair agency. God, I'm sick of this... I think I should start hunting and kill a grizzly too, and use its hide as a souvenir on the wall. You can say that this is my dream, guys. I hope I will see this one day. I'm fifty-three years old, that's what I think I should do in retirement. I think hunting is a great pastime, don't you? And so I wish you good luck and a good mood.
