Lightbulb How to prevent arthritis

My now-10-month basset has had a shoulder making a little popping sound that I could hear sometimes. She did not seem bothered by it but I still had the vet check it out and he said she had a micro luxation of the shoulder. Recommendations were
  • Be super-vigilant on weight, always!
  • Avoid stairs or jumping off of sofa etc without help
  • Exercise, preferably on not-so-hard surfaces, forget pavement and go to the forest trails instead (works their muscles better)
  • Start her on some arthritis supplement, won't hurt
  • When she is fully grown around 18 month, check the join more deeply with MRI or something like that

My questions are:
- I was always afraid she was getting too much exercise (she is running around with other dogs all day at daycare. She does not stop!) then long (1-2 hours) strolls on the weekends. Did I cause this?
- What do you think of the preventative Arthritis Supplement and is there one you would recommend?
- How do you calculate the calories your dog needs in a day? The vet suggested she lost a few pounds (I agreed, I was wondering if she was not losing her waist a little bit and had started limited the food already) but then when he gave me the calories count it was exactly what I was already feeding her.

And finally any advice you would have on what I can do now about this shoulder so we do not need to take any painful steps later would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all!

Default Arthritis and why ...

Much of what's in this article may help you re your hound's arthritis. Generally this is the result of some abnormal conformation. Too much weight/early exercise CAN exacerbate things however. A puppy should have sensible limited exercise between 6 and 12 months so he reaches that age still sound. Up to 6 months, there should be no real hard exercise (organised, on pavements) but obviously the young hound needs to be able to run around to build up the correct muscles to support the heavy bone. Much of abnormal construction is hereditary however. Stairs, down especially, and jumping off furniture especially, should be avoided in the young hound.

You can't really prevent arthritis, sadly. As I know from my personal experience.

Be careful re supplementing - most good dog food, complete, contains 'arthritis supplements'.
