So much wrong with all of this and I'm crying for this poor puppy and wonder who sold him to you, presumably knowing you work all day. Bassets, along with most other HOUNDS do not do well having to spend long lonely hours. This is a pack animal and not having a canine pack, YOU become that. To leave him in the bathroom, of all places, on his own all day, and all night, is just not going to lead to a happy puppy, by a long way. Puppies need to be able to run around when awake too, so their muscles and joints develop as they should. You might take a look at the vids., left on here by 'Mikey' which shows exactly what a litter of puppy Bassets should be doing in terms of playing - again without siblings, with YOU.

Of course he's whining.

And going to using pee pads - DON'T! This is the lazy option and apart from the real risk of him trying to chew them up, and choking, only teaches him that emptying indoors, when he feels the need is acceptable. Which clearly it's not.

And about the apartment idea. Unless you are on the ground floor with a contained private outside area, you'll have no option but to use pee pads which again is only going to delay getting him housetrained - and you'll have to 'untrain' him re these wretched pads, and train him properly eventually.

As for the whining - this will turn into howling and barking which if you have close neighbours, will bring them to your door with complaints - guaranteed.

If you can't have somebody come in with your baby Basset when you are out, or once he's had all his vaccination shots, into a good day creche, none of this is going to work. Something his BREEDER should have told you and, as I did, under your current circumstances, not sold you this puppy I'm afraid.

I can't read this, know I should before responding, but why have you got a pup. Would you bring a baby home from the hospital, leave it in the bathroom & go to work?
Please don't say it's a Christmas/Thanksgiving present!
