Default Stairs

We will be bringing home our new basset pup next weekend. He will be 11 weeks old. We have two steps from our porch to the lawn. We have heard that bassets should not use stairs until 6 mos to protect their backs. Will 2 steps be ok or do we need to create a ramp? Thanks!

It's not their backs, but their fronts that you have to be careful with, at least until they have decent muscle tone to protect that area. And yes, I'd buy a ramp, or make one. It only takes one 'woosh' down the steps for the hound to be injured, and maybe suffer with that for all his life. We always had ramps for our youngsters, and now, with our lad who has structural problems, we had to 're-ramp' the 3 outside steps to the garden. And watch him on furniture. Especially getting off which is when injury is more likely to happen and especially if he's a big-type hound.
