Default Who said Bassets are 'stupid'!!

I thought I'd share the latest with Frankie. He has always been keen on apples and we have a small tree out back which tends to drop the small ones ahead of being fully ripe, which it's doing right now. Frankie knows this and has taken to proudly bringing one in, at the same time each afternoon (weather permitting or the door to the back isn't open). He does drop/leave when asked, but to reward him he gets half a biscuit (Bonio equivalent). He's quickly cottoned on to this, much as I haven't given him any treat each time but clearly it didn't take long for him to learn he brings an apple in (he's actually never gone to eat it, he just plays with it like a cat with a mouse) and he probably gets a biscuit!

Mariah did this with socks. Her mom was so worried she would eat them when play she would always exchange. (Mariah tended to be a resource guarder) Everyone else figured out she would soon tire of the if no outside reward and drop the in less than a minute. So when ever she absconded with sock she ran to her mom and no one else.

It just more proof of the old dog training adage you get the behavior you reward not the behavior you want.

Basset hounds are unusual good at training their owners generally far better than the owners are at training them. That is because they are more consistent and predictable in rewarding desired behavior .

agree about the training. Grace has been easy and fun to train. I am running out of things to teach her!
