Potty training and peeing...

Realistically, when in the average that a basset can hold their pee for more than 20 min. Elwood seems to like to make many small piddles all the time. I watch him like a hawk and sometimes he still sneaks out a few drops.

I know they're hard to train. he's doing REALLY well. Only 1 poop in a week in the house. He whines when he has to go, really go. In the morning, he has longer pees so I know he can hold it longer than he does.

What is the best way to approach this? I take him out very often, give him praises and all of that.

With my Shepherd, it was about 16 weeks or so when she was fully potty trained and has only gone in the house like 2 x's since, once was after her spay and she was all whacked on Valium.

I know they're different breeds, and I don't expect Elwood to be trained by then... was just looking for a ballpark.

I'm a stay at home Mom. Kids are here for summer, then back to school Aug 22nd and it's just me and the dogs all day.

As MikeyT likes to say "activity produces urine". Or something like that. At any rate, what it means is that as long as the pup is active, he's gonna have to go more often - sometimes every 5 minutes! OTOH when he's sleeping he can obviously go longer.

On top of praise, a couple of things you can do are give a treat as well (remember, Bassets like to get paid, and although they like your praise they don't see it as a reason to do something, unlike a GSD), and teach a cue like "hurry up" "get busy" "go potty" or something like that so that he associates the cue with doing his business. This is very helpful when away from home, or when you need him to go NOW, it helps him understand what he's there for.

Yeah. I keep saying... Let's go pee pee. I feel like an idiot w my high baby voice. He's probably like, your dumb, I'll pee when I'm ready. I always forget to grab greets. Zeva isn't food driven and she would die before she ate the training treats I have for him, the picky bitch.

He also does not like it when the grass is cool and wet. Potty training a basset in winter has to be in like the seventh level of hell. Zeva was a winter dog, it sucked but she grew taller faster lol.

Thanks for the advice.

most bassets hate rain, water and dew but love snow go figure,

As MikeyT likes to say "activity produces urine".

A 12 wk puppy who is busy playing may need to urinate every 15-20 minutes, whereas a resting puppy might go for an hour, and a sleeping puppy can go 8 hours at night. Activity makes urine! Activity makes urine! Repeat this 10 times, slowly. This is a very important lesson for new puppy owners.
Go to the place where you want him to eliminate, and be as boring as possible. Stay in one place. This is not a walk for sniffing and exploring.
Use commands for elimination. I use a different word for each function, "Quickly" for urinate, and "Hurry up!" for defecate. You can choose your own words, just be sure they are not words used in everyday conversation, or at least have a unique way of saying it. One friend of mine uses "Zoom" for urinate. Each function uses different muscle groups so they are different behaviors. Say "Quickly!" repeatedly until the pup urinates. It becomes a habit for both of you, and soon you will only need to say it once and he will go immediately. This is the ONLY TIME I recommend saying a command repeatedly in training. "

I am of firm belief that the difficulty is housetraining a basset is sphincter control, as the slower to develop than other breed, I have not seen a basset puppy what I would call house trained younger than 6 months and 1 year is more typical Keep in mind a lack of accidents is not an indication of housetraining this is a big mistake people make , A lack of accident is and indication of proper management that will allow house training to occur, The next biggest pit fall I see in house training is a lack of a signal for the dog to use to tell the human it need to go. Very often this does not occur naturally IMHO it is best to train a behavior that you want such as ringing a bell house training ring my bell

So they like snow... humm... that's ok, I guess lol. Zeva doesn't mind it much either... she's not a fan of the rain. Stands there in it and wont go pee unless I walk out w/ her... spoiled doggies.
