Today Logan got neutered.. needless to say it has been a rough afternoon he is having a really hard time with the pain and getting comfortable not to mention with this cone it's on his head does anybody have any advice or tips maybe to get me through the rest of this night? He's my baby and this is killing me!
Not to mention he's so uncomfortably hurting he won't stay still and has started bleeding a little I called the emergency # from the clinic but of course they haven't called
In all honesty, he shouldn't be in THAT much pain - this is a comparatively simple surgery, or should be unless they had to go in to find a missing testicle? In any case, he should normally have had some form of pain relief to last the first 24 hours. But again, not all vets do this as it is a simple surgery.
My boy, if he ever has a general anaesthetic, 'milks it' for all he's worth. I give him the non-drug Kalm Aid which does help. But male Bassets especially tend to be 'needy'!
The operating vet should have been able to be reached via their 24 hour service - when closed. Their Service should pick up, take your details, call the on duty vet who should get back to you quickly and either advise you, or arrange to see you. Call them again.
I've never managed to get mine to accept wearing a cone - because they need a big size but are low to ground, this often means the cone bangs on the floor, terrifying them. You might go for a soft roll collar to keep him off the wound which may seep, but shouldn't be 'bleeding'.
I can only offer, apart from calling your vet again, you have him in a warn quiet place and try to sit it out with him. Some of them take a while for the anaesthetic to wear off, and this makes them be more fussy than normal (for a Basset male!).
The 24 hr nurse finally called back have been up with him all night! Have to take him at 830 am.. He is finally resting... They should have sent him home with some kind of pain reliever to begin with! Keep my boy in your thoughts will update asap!
Hope things are better! Pain meds for sure, so many don't believe in them, but I sure do....why WOULDN'T that hurt.... Also, there is an inflatable collar option that is less cumbersome for dogs....but ours got used to the "cone of shame"....just REALLY unhappy about it.....
Logan is resting wonderfully now! He was just in so much discomfort he couldn't be still! We are good now!
