Default Show leads/collars????

Hi all. Well we have a new boy and this time not a rescue. He finished last fall, but needs to grow up a bit, he will be two in May. We are going to local conformation class at the club.....using an old nylon martingale that is not working well...don't seem to have enough control. Of course training will help some with that. Only had him two weeks.
I see many using snake chains/leads. I have always used martingales..but?? Deer hide, Nylon, Kangaroo, what size, how many mm's for the chain, lengths? To bling or not to bling. So many combo's What do you find works for you?

Hi ya
To be honest if he's been in the ring and finished already, why not talk to his breeder/exhibitor (?) and see what they used. I varied between a very fine 'choke' chain and a plain red lead, and an again fine chained martingale. I didn't bling-up my collars/leads but let the hound speak for himself/herself. I did make sure what I was wearing, colour-wise complimented the colour of the hound - making him stand out, not swamped by my skirt/trousers.

ps With a fine chain, there needs to be a degree of training already so you don't have to haul on the collar!!

I'll see if my photo of Morgan le Fay shows her collar and RED lead and add it.

Here is Morgan - You can just see a little of her fine chain in this pix.

Here is Emma (Bewitched) with her red martingale - you can just about figure it out. Sorry to post two 'answers' but I don't know how to add multiple thumbnails ...

Got a response from his breeder....he uses a fine choke chain. Thought so from his championship pic. We are in a class, so we will have to try some things, but no substitute for training. I agree, I am not so much into bling, prefer to let the dog be the focus. Someone sent me a link with some nice leather and chain martingale combo leads from France. Just thinking for now maybe a chain might give more control.

Although I usually just use a nylon choke/lead combo, I do like the snake collars, they are strong and have a smooth action and look nice. The gold ones fade, though. I don't normally bling.

I like the look of the snake collars too, but not sure of the size. Any idea what size to choose for a headstrong young male? Would like to "practice" at some local shows. Some around here have NO bassets entered......

I would bring him to the booth at the show and try them on to see what fits best. I prefer thicker if the dog has a tendency to pull, finer is ok if the dog is trained and you aren't actually using the collar as restraint.
