Default Breeding our 4yr old

We have an almost 4 year old lemon AKC basset hound and are interested in studding him out. Not sure how to go about this. Any information would be appreciated. We are located in SanFrancisco.

Send a message via Yahoo to Mikey T

Unless you have some sort of titles on him the interest is going to be non existent.

I'd totally agree with what has been written already. Further, you do realise that once you've allowed this to happen (if it does!) he will start looking for the next one to mate with. Pandora's Box!! Leave him as the much loved pet he is.

Even if a dog is shown successfully and has a title, it's more likely people will go to HIS sire rather than the dog himself. If available.

Most good breeders use their potential stud dogs themselves, to see what they 'throw' before offering them at public stud. And even then, will be experienced enough to know if an owner wanting to use him, has a top quality bitch, which will 'nick' with his bloodlines. They also start his studding career way sooner than age 4.

Good breeders put a non-breeding endorsement on immature stock and that would have to be lifted (by his breeder if they feel he's good enough) for any progeny he has to be able to be registered with the relevant Kennel Club.

Please think long and hard before going ahead - remembering that the owner of the stud dog is 50% responsible for what he produces!!

It is a beautiful race without a doubt, it is also one of my favorites for me.
