Performance Books
for Basset Hound Trainers

The following titles may be ordered directly from amazon.com, the most reliable and respected virtual bookstore on the web. All profits that I make from the sale of these books will be donated to BHCares.

Patricia Gail Burnham, Play Training Your Dog (1986). One of the first books in "motivational training," and still a classic. The author's background in training greyhounds makes the book of particular interest to basset hound trainers.

Linda Colflesh, Making Friends: Training Your Dog Positively (1990). Although primarily written for "pet" training rather than competition obedience, this well-written book is very useful for those of us interested in learning positive training techniques for our bassets.

Julie Daniels, Enjoying Dog Agility: From Backyard to Competition (1991). A growing number of basset owners are becoming interested in agility, and this book helps show us how to train our dogs to jump safely.

Louis Wilson Davis, Go Find! Training Your Dog to Track (1974). A classic book in tracking training.

Jacqueline Fraser and Amy Ammen, Dual Ring Dog: Successful Training for Both Conformation and Obedience (1991). Guide to training your dog to succeed in both obedience and conformation, written by two authors who have trained many dogs for both sports successfully.

Barbara Handler, Successful Obedience Handling: The New Best Foot Forward (1991). A very useful book geared to the new and/or infrequent obedience exhibitor, covering such topics as knowing when your dog is ready to show, how to enter an obedience trial, what to do on the day of the trial, and what is expected of you in each of the different AKC obedience clases.

Janet R. Lewis, Smart Trainers, Brilliant Dogs (1997). A new, very useful book focusing on operant conditioning and motivational training.

Jane Simmons-Moake, Agility Training: The Fun Sport for All Dogs (1992). A good book on agility training with diagrams for building your own obstacles.

Karen Pryor, Don't Shoot the Dog (1985). The classic in operant conditioning; this book has become almost a cult favorite among dog trainers. Every basset hound trainer should have a copy in his or her library.

AnneMarie Silverton videos: one of the finest obedience trainers in the country shows how one can achieve high scores using food, toys, and judicious proofing. And yes, it even works for basset hounds! I found the puppy tape particularly indispensable.

Martha Covington Thorne, Handling Your Own Dog for Show, Obedience, and Field Trials (1979). Out of print, but amazon.com will attempt to locate a copy. A wonderful, charming book that should be read by anyone interested in owning and training a versatile dog.
