Alvin Grossman, The Standard Book of Dog Breeding: A New Look (1992). Indispensable book for both the novice and the experienced breeder of purebred dogs.
Lynn Hall, Dog Showing for Beginners (1994). A clear, candid guide to dog shows by one of the most popular writers of dog books for children and young adults.
------, Kids and Dog Shows (1975). Out of print, but amazon.com will attempt to locate a copy. I'm including this one as a sentimental favorite, since I spent hours and hours pouring over it as a child, dreaming of show dogs in my future.
Jane and Michael Stern, Dog Eat Dog: A Very Humorous Book About Dogs and Dog Shows (1997). A behind-the-scenes look at the subculture of dog shows. The authors are well-known columnists who trail after a successful breeder and exhibitor and chuckle at their findings. Those of us who are "in" dogs, of course, are less likely to be startled, but the book is a pleasure to read nonetheless.
Connie Vanacore, Dog Showing: An Owner's Guide (1990). Useful book aimed at novices to the sport of showing dogs.
Chris Walkkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox, DVM, Successful Dog Breeding: The Complete Handbook of Canine Midwifery. (1994). A well-written guide to breeding purebred dogs. Includes many notes on avoiding genetic health problems.
Malcolm B. Willis, Genetics of the Dog (1989). A classic in canine genetics.
