Default What to do w/inherited Basset?

My husband' father passed away, and he was the proud owner of a 12 yr old Basset. We have taken the dog, but are in a dilemmea:
We do not wish for the dog to stay indoors in our house. We both work full time and are not able to take the dog out while we are at work (he stays in a crate in the garage). The dog does not particularly like being outdoors, but doesn't complain when he is in his crate. Most often, he has urinated on his dog bed that was in his crate because he was in there during the day.
Honestly, we don't want to keep the dog, but feel obligated since his owner died. We aren't really "dog" people, as we have basically just tolerated him.
He still eats regularly and when the sun is shining, he likes to lie in the sun...other than that he sleeps most of the time. Also, he has tumors on his legs and the side of his body and have been told that they aren't malignant.

I realize that everyone who posts on these boards are lovers of the Basset, but we don't know what to do. We really, really don't want this dog anymore..please don't judge. What are our options? Also, I have tried contacting the closest rescue group to where we live, and I did not receive a response. I guess he's too old.

He is not too old to be placed with a rescue. You need to be more proactive and make sure you get in touch with someone within the organization, pester them if you have to. My heart breaks for this dog. I know you did not sign up for this but he is now your responsibility. He sure didn't ask to be living in a home that doesn't adore him. Welcome him into your home and contact every Vet and Rescue within 300 miles of your home. Where are you located? I adopted a 15 year old and she gave me more than I would ever dream. Dig deep and share your heart and home, you won't regret it. Don't give up, you can find him a good home! Good luck, Lisa

Like Gabby I have to say I hope you can open your heart to this little guy – he just lost his world when he lost your father-in-law and his world has been turned upside down. He has to be scared to death with all the changes that’s going on around him and knows he’s not loved but tolerated. He needs a big hug.

Without saying your city – what state are you in – if you don’t have the time to call around to rescues because of your work schedule – I’ll be happy to make calls on your behalf so he can get into a loving home and out of the garage as soon as possible – without knowing what state you’re in I’m worried that the garage is too cold for him at this time of year. If you prefer not to post that info – feel free to pm me anytime –

If you live anywhere near Missouri, please message me. I will gladly take this guy and find him a new home.

Out of state rescues will take them sometimes......please share where you are, we will try and work our magic here to get this poor old fella a nice home to live out the remainder of his time. There are lots of "dog people" who LOVE seniors (myself included!)

I understand this thread and that some people are just not dog or pet people. But it also made me think that maybe I should add something to our trust stating how we want the babies taken care of and maybe an extra 10 or 20 grand to the kid that will take care of them and spoil them the way they are use to.

You are missing out on a real opportinity with this guy. But I respect that not everyone is bessotted with doggies, and Bassets that we all are.

Let us know where you are, this community runs far and wide and we can help!!

thank you everyone for your responses. we are in NC, near Charlotte. let me also add that we have had him for almost a year, and have really given it our best effort. right before my father in law passed away, he told us that he knew he could no longer care for this dog, and said he was ready to put him down (I'm guessing it was also because he felt the dog didn't have much longer to live given his age and medical condition).

if anyone knows of a rescue group in the nc area, I would appreciate the information. thanks again.

also if you are willing let it be know you are willing to house/care for him till a more appropriate home is found. The problem most rescue have is enough foster homes. If you are willing to hang onto the dog till the right home can be found they will generally be more willing to work with you.
