Hi! Congrats on your basset adoption, they are truly wonderful pets with gentle spirits. I rescued our basset last summer and she was a hot mess when we got her. She had lots of separation anxiety issues, fearful and showed all the signs of not being socialized as a puppy.
Here are some suggestions for you: 1. Ask your vet or the local shelter about a training course that they recommend. We did an eight week training class with Libby and it was SO helpful. My husband and I learned so much about dog behavior and how to train her. Libby is not perfect, but her behavior is 100% better, she is leash trained, house trained etc... 2. The thundershirt was a good purchase for her. My husband jokingly called it the "valium vest" because when we put her on it she was calm and kinda acted drunk. We only used for the first few months when she was anxious and during thunderstorms. She no longer needs it. 3. I also suggest crate training to help with house training and teaching your dog about comings and going. Here's a link to an aspca article that discusses crate training: ASPCA - Virtual Pet Behaviorist - Weekend Crate Training 4. Create a routine for when you leave the house and come home. Basics are never force dog into the crate, give treat when they go in the crate, turn on soothing music or talk radio for when you are gone and don't make a big deal out of leaving and returning. 5. For the whining our trainer told us to ignore whining when it was unwanted and reward good behavior. For example, dog is whining at you in the house for no reason: ignore whining. Dog quiets down and is laying in front of you now: grab treat, say "good quiet" and resume ignoring. I would avoid teaching your dog that whining = attention! 6. Love, attention and time: Lots of pets, walks, playing in the yard and time will help your new dog adjust. I bet in a month you will be pleasantly surprised to see how much your new pup has adjusted to his new life! |

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I will definitely look into them.
He was at my mom's house all last week during the day... he hates the car rides but gets so excited once in there and playing with his new BFF - Baxter the Pug. He even exhausted Baxter out (which is crazy). Lol. He loves being able to go in/out to the back yard with the two other dogs... and now the Boxer Mix is enjoying his company (it was a little touch and go with them at first). Yesterday when I came to pick the kids and him up... he was in the back yard... w/ the Boxer Mix and both were wagging their tails at me, excited to see me. LOL. Since then... the whining has calmed down dramatically! Only when he's ready to go to the bathroom. And we did have one accident... Sunday/Monday morning... but I don't think it was his fault, he probably tried to wake us up in the middle of the night and couldn't get anyone awake. So he's forgiven. Other than that... at the end of the day, he's wore out... and usually ends up going to sleep for the rest of the night. Even over the weekend he was pretty chill... Plus I think he's just finally used to being in our house. I even noticed he's getting more playful with us... and got to see him try to play with the Pug. |

So glad to hear Boogy is doing better. We got a 11 year old basset/redbone mix in May and she wined all the time also. I was pretty sure allot of it was do to her being in unfamiliar territory, and most of it was. She still does it sometimes but not nearly as much.
I try and make sure my dogs get allot of exercise and I really believe this helps allot. Even though he gets to play with your moms dogs I would make sure you give him a walk as much as you can. My motto has always been a good hound is a tired hound. Good luck and keep us posted. |
