I have to say that I have taken in a dog without much known about her. Breezy came to us not from Craig's list but from a total stranger stopping my husband while he was walking our other hounds. He was told a similar story about needing to reduce the number of dogs due to having to take in his father, etc. We (or I should say I) decided to meet her but knew that without a doubt this dog was coming home with us. We knew only what the owners told us (which is to say they could have been lying to us). We must have gotten lucky with her because she's a wonderful dog. That being said we've had our fair share of problems, including potty training and resource guarding issues. Some of the issues we're still working on but overall she's a wonderful dog! I think that with any adult dog you're going to have some challenges. I wish you luck!

I took my time looking for my dogs though. I browsed craigslist so much I should have gone to craigslist anonymous. :P
In the end I looked at probably a hundred dogs, but I was happy when I found my babies

I just took a volunteer position for one of our local basset rescues as their "Craigslist Surfer". I check CL for bassets being sold or given up and the rescue tries to help them out.

Oh Annie - yea for you - I wish I could do something like that but I'm far to big a sap and would end up with more hounds than I could handle or that the village I live in would allow.

Ya know – with what I was going through at the time – my memory isn’t very good – but wasn’t there someone that got a basset from Craigslist that had all the medical problems. The little memory of it I had was the guy that sold the Basset worked in a vet’s office or something? I think it was something with his eyes and the puppy had to have them both removed? I remember about a story like that because the Basset was so sick I spend many a night praying for him when I did for Flash. Maybe he got him from somewhere else – but I remember something about the eyes. With all I was going through though – I can’t trust my own memory – you guys would remember more than I would I’m sure.

It could go either way, not much different than adopting from a dog pound etc. If you are willing to take the gamble you may end up with a great dog. Not all (most) dogs that end up on Craigslist or in the shelter aren't "broken" it is from irresponsible owners/breeders......and at least you will know the dog will have a good home. We had a MONSTER in our area that tortured/killed more than 20 dogs from "free to good home" ads in paper and craigslist etc. Serial killer in the making no doubt.....grrrr

That's so sad. I don't understand why so many people don't charge a rehoming fee for their dogs. That would cut down on so much of that!

You won't find a reputable breeder on Craigslist. However, in my experience, people aren't trying to sell basset hound puppies on CL. In my area, the bassets on CL are one of two things:

1. Rescues posted by local shelters. I'd consider them reputable given that they fully vet the dogs ahead of time. You'll find a lot of basset mixes, but there are purebreds as well (without papers of course, so I guess you can't say 100% for certain they are 100% purebred)

2. Giveaways. Owners no longer want their 1-7 year old basset. They are moving, developed allergies, whatever... In some cases you get to know their medical history and in other cases you don't. If they don't get adopted via Craigslist, they are often dumped at the pound.

In both cases, these dogs need new homes. If you're just looking for a pet-quality basset, Craigslist may be a good option. If you end up adopting for the rescue who posted, then you aren't contributing to the buy-and-resale or steal-and-resale side of CL.

If you adopt from the family that just needs to get rid of their dog, evaluate carefully. Consider the amount of the rehoming fee, ask for medical records, ask for photos of the dog in a family setting, and generally try to get a good sense of whether the family stole the dog and is trying to make a buck on the poor dog.

My foster coordinator for the area regularly rescues dogs from Craigslist whose owners no longer want them. She picks them up for free, no rehoming fee, and brings them to her Basset Ranch. the owners typically give the dog up saying the dog has X or Y problem. The coordinator typically finds that the animal doesn't have X or Y problem when properly attended to.

For example, one basset was given up because he bit the owner. The full story was more along the lines of....three unneutered males in the house (she wanted to use them as studs), 1 basset, 2 yippy dogs. Yippy dogs instigated a fight with basset, basset tried to run away but couldn't. Owner tries to break up fight by getting into the middle. Basset bites owner. (Well duh, what did you think would happen when you got into the middle of a dog fight?) Owner wants to get rid of basset because Yippy dogs are WAY too loveable and OF COURSE they would never instigate a fight again. Basset hadn't seen medical care since he was a pup. Basset is labeled as dog aggressive.

Pup comes to us and is the sweetest thing. LOVES the company of other bassets. With a little love and medical attention (needed shots, neutering, and allergy meds), he's a friendly bundle of joy.

Hard to believe the owners were going to put him down at 2 years old if someone didn't take him.

This was the case for two of my former fosters. The first was adopted out within two months to a home with three other bassets. The second, we adopted and love every day.

That's not the case in ALL CL posts, but you get the idea.

If you plan on showing bassets, CL probably isn't for you. But you can certainly make a difference in the life of an unwanted pet.
