Hi, I am in process of adopting a Basset Hound. The rescue approved my application, so all that's left is the home visit. And I know that will be fine, so I am very excited. I just can't wait for it to be official!
His name is Stretch and the rescue group found him in a shelter. They think he had been living outdoors, so are not sure of his age, but the rescue vet estimated he is 8. I have never had a Basset, but had an English Bulldog named General for nine years, but he passed away last month. I am really looking forward to giving Stretch a great forever home. I've been doing lots of online research about the breed and joined here to learn even more!

Congratulations!!! I LOVE the name Stretch!!! I hope you aren't planning on changing it. I'm glad you did research on this breed before just going and getting one. So you won't be surprised by their slowness to housetrain, their stubborness, and their tendency to follow their noses! That's great. I'm sure you'll enjoy him and you'll definitely learn a lot from the other people on the forum. Good luck! And please post pictures when you can! We all love to look at the cute bassets. Congratulations again!

Yay! You will love having him in your family I'm sure. Anabelle was also estimated at 8 when we adopted her and had been living outdoors. You will probably have a few weeks to months of adjustment time for him to get on a normal schedule, but it will all be more than worth it in the end.

Shelly, Are you adopting Stretch from 4 the Hounds Rescue group? They have a Stretch that is 3 years old, whose adoption is in progress. We have adopted 4 Bassets from this group. They are great in matching families and Bassets! Best wishes to you and Stretch!!!!

How wonderful! My husband and I just adopted Isabella, around 1 yr., last Wed.. We had two wonderful bassets, Maizy Mae and Jake (our first rescue) who went the to bridge last year within three months of each other at the age of 12 and 13. We still have our l7 yr. old rescue Siamese (not a happy camper these days). Long story, getting Isabella was exciting, but immediately we knew, or remembered Jake's issues of acclimating. He was extremely nervous, man-shy, afraid of any doors or noises. It took a month, using leash, to housetrain him, along with a kennel. Isabella is a handful--countersurfs, leaps over furniture and on people with the ease of a gazelle and does not like me to be anywhere but in her site or she poops right there, and pees for good measure. She challenges any baby gate (noise is not an issue with her I put bells on them so I can hear when they go down) which she promptly knocks over, and we are now considering kenneling until she gets used to us. We would have originally, but she had been in two fosters already --adopted and returned in between, and was allowed to sleep on the bed with the owner/foster dogs. So we did that, but it is totally out of control. She also gets up at 2 and 4 am to roam, and we with her. After four days of this we are so sleep deprived! Sometimes you have to go backwards to make progress. I will say this, my husband is much more tolerant of her accidents now than he was with Jake so long ago. He understands. Good luck and patience be with you!
