Hi there, I gotta new puppy, his name is Cody and he is 9 weeks now. After my 16 year old German Shepherd I grew up with diied 2 years ago I couldnt stop thinking about getting a new dog, but I live in somewhat of a smaller place now and getting a very large dog like that just wasnt a good idea. After reading up tons of stuff, the decision was between a Beagle and the Basset Hound. I decided on the Basset since he can be more calm then the Beagle but right now, that doesnt seem to be relevant. Cody is SO hyper it's not even funny, Ive had him for 2.5 weeks now and let me tell ya, having a baby is less work then Cody, babys dont crawl up the steps and tumble down the steps. I read some 6-7 books on Bassets and everything about them seems perfect except the drooling part, I will definitely have to find a way to deal with this, I dont want my house to look like there are 433 dogs living here.
Taking Cody out to parks and walks is a challange, we can't even walk 10 feet without being stormed by people.."oh my gooood!!! hes so cute, look at his eyes, oh my god he is stepping on his ears, omg look how he walks funny" You know the drill. I'm thinking of making him a shirt that says"
"Basset Hound, 9 weeks, Boy-Cody, Eyes and ears are normal, I love old ladies and I'm $3.50 to be pet by you and if you interupt me while I potty you have to clean daddy's carpet"
Ok by the time I typed all this, I had to get up 4 times to get him out of trouble!
I will post up more on Cody, he will be going to the vet this week for the rest of his shots and discuss nutering
P.S.
Forgot to mention, Cody is doing some basic puppy training now, he is very good with the crate, his potty is going so so he is getting better and learning the name is in progress now.
In about 3 more months when he is out of the brain development stage we will be doing the Canine Good Citizen Certificate training. I want to get Cody his tags and papers so we can go visit elderly in nursing homes to help them with their days, some hospitals to go see kids in recovery, physical therapy, and stuff like that. I think he will be a very good dog for that.

What a good lookin hound! I know what you mean about going on walks with a puppy... Try taking a puppy on a walk through a college campus. Talk about a chick magnet.

Congrats in getting a basset hound!

Puppies are a handful no matter what kind you get. The key is being consistant with training and giving your baby a lot of attention. If you're upset because he's getting into things, then you will need to give him boundries. Like crate training, keeping stuff off the floor and areas where he can get to, blocking off rooms etc.

Please don't let your puppy fall down the stairs! If he's too short to do the stairs you'll have to block them off and wait till he's old enough to take them on.

As for dealing with drool.....some dogs have a wetter mouth than others. After all, drool rules! (per Ruby)

It's funny that you opted for a basset hound instead of a german shepherd
because of the size. My basset weighs 22 pounds more than the neighbour's
fully grown male shepherd.

Well, anyway. Enjoy the puppy age, it's gone before you know it. To you're
relief.

i keep my eyes on him all the time when he is out the crate so i can catch him before he pottys so he doesnt get into too much stuff, we established what he cant get into, he isnt chewing any wires anymore, papers are not a toy now but just about anything else goes. as far as the steps, after going up 10 times i got tired couple of times and just let him, he is so so so in love with the toilet brush so he carried it down couple times and fell down. didnt seem to slow him down. maybe his next chew toy is a new toilet brush?
thanks. ruby is cute

thanks. you can understand the difference between a german shepherd and basset, shephards are completely different animals...weight isnt the issue at all, its how you cary it

I think bassets are naturals for pet therapy. Besides me and Murray, there are several others on this forum who are certified pet therapy teams: Maggies Mommy, Belinda, and Milly and Lily are the teams I know of. (Hope I haven't left anyone out.)

Sometimes I feel guilty that I seem to get as much out of doing pet therapy as the folks we visit! It's very rewarding.

If you go ahead with this, please keep us posted- I love hearing what other pet therapy teams are doing in other parts of the country!

If you can train him to clean the toilet with the toilet brush, then you'll be rich!!!!
