I posted earlier with a bunch of questions, too many for people to answer. The one question we were really hoping to get an answer to.:
What is the best ground cover to use in a dog run, for them to poop in etc...?

We have plain old grass The rocks or pebbles aren't so good because occasionally a basset may take a liking to eating them. Mine eat the mulching so we use very little. I have a separate dog run- it opens with a doggie door into a tiled kitchen. The dog run is fenced apart from the rest of the yard- They are able to go in a and out into a safe enclosed play area just for hounds- I do have a few plants like sweet broom that are behind a little gardening fence- it keeps the air smelling pretty but very little else... anything else in the run- trees included- gets gnawed upon!

I'd go with grass too.

We installed an artificial grass putting green, which is now called the pooping green. It is the preferred place for houndie elimination. My husband is not amused. :P

That just pushed me over the edge this morning. I am sorry to laugh! I agree with the mulch, not a good idea. Just plain old grass. Right now we are filling in the winter holes with top soil, and staking them off with green mesh fencing to give them a fighting chance! The doggie door is such a good idea, but we are afraid to cut into the house and the screen door is aluminum. We really don't need it because Moosie just pushes the door open with his nose when he wants out! Katie always waits like a lady for us to open the door for her! We try to keep rocks and leaves out of their play space because they eat them! Plus they eat the roses, baby breath and anything else in their way! Oh my! Part of the joy of loving our babies!

At least your basset doesn't know how to open the door...

My parents basset (about 8 1/2 years old) can open the basement door. The latch is loose, so he just jumps up and smacks the knob with his paw and the door pops ajar, then he pushes it open with his nose. It's become commonplace to hear "WILLY! YOU LEFT THE DOOR OPEN AGAIN!" being yelled by my mom.

That is really funny! I am waiting for the day when he figures out how to open the doors that have the levers! Then I will really be in trouble.

We have a fenced in pen off our deck that Forrest and Sparky (our Beagle) use. We installed large patio bricks on the ground. The boys do not have a problem "eliminating" on them and it's super easy to scoop up and hose off. We also have a large fenced in yard that they occassionally let loose in.

Bianca does most of her "business" when on a walk--when she can get many sniffs of others "business," I guess. She has a fenced area (some grass) that she uses at times, but--for instance--This morning she just HAD to go for a walk in the yucky weather to do her stuff. She just knows when I haven't taken her for her quota of walks--usually 2.

Don't use mulch. Ruby used to eat it out of our gardens when she was a puppy and she'd get soooo sick.

Grass is best.
