"A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site www.menufoods.com/recall early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738."

I copied this from an MSNBC article 3/16/07 - could not get the link ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17650075/ ) to work, so just quoted.

edited to say I finally got the link to work-

Most people may already know this, but there has been a recall for Iams canned food products. There is more information on the Iams site or menufoods.com. I believe it's only for the "Chunks with Beef" products. There has been cases of kidney failure in cats due to the menu foods. No dog cases yet. I feed my dogs dry Wellness but mix in canned Iams. I'm going to return the Iams cans I have not used for a refund. Jim

How to Read Product Code from Eukanuba's website, applies to recalled Iams and Eukanuba products.

Thanks for the heads up!! We use Nutro and just checked all our cans. None are on the recall list. We just mainly feed dry Nutro Natural Choice, and give him 1/4 a can of canned Nutro Narural Choice Lamb & Rice a day to spice up the dry food. He loves it. Now I'm nervous about feeding any of it to him even though it's not on the recall list.

I'm with you BubbaLeroy. I feed Spencer Nutro can food. The type I feed him is on the list, but the date is different. Still, I don't think I'll give him anymore of what I have left. Better safe than sorry.

What is especially odd is that it's only the WET CANNED food, as far as I can tell ...AND they are all sold by the same company .

The brands are everything from one end of the spectrum to the other. That's odd to me. Why would there be the same ingredients in Ol Roy as in Nutro??

Welcome to the world of manufacturing. Sounds like one of the ingredients (in this case tainted in some way) is used in all these different foods. They make them in large batches, and are slapped with different labels, etc.
