Jeffrey update

We just got some better news about Jeffrey! Our breeder has him at her vet, and they think he just has a bad case of hook worms, along with the rest of the litter (they're all anemic). They're giving him antibiotics and vitamin B12, and he's starting to eat yogurt and milk. They said that if he keeps progressing, he should get better in about two weeks.

I think there's a possiblilty that Jeffrey might have some kind of blood disorder. Does anyone know more about this?

My husband and I are really excited about Jeffrey's update, but we're trying not to get our hopes up too high. Just a question to throw out there: Does anyone think that this sickness would do anything to harm the development of a puppy? One of the vets said that not eating for 12 hours could be very detrimental to a puppy's health. We love Jeffrey and are hoping and praying for a fast recovery so that he can come home to be with us again. No one can love him as much as we do!

Ooooh, hookworms are nasty, esp. for little pups! Poor little guy.

One thing you might ask your vet about is cleaning your yard and all areas little Jeffrey pooped in. I think he can catch them again - but I'm not sure. Maybe someone here will know?

In any case, good news!

Hmm.. blood disorders in Bassets.

About the only one that comes to mind is Thrombopathy Basset Hound thrombopathy is a bleeding disorder distinct from other inherited bleeding problems such as hemophilia or von Willebrand's disease, which are also present in the breed. It should be noted that Von Willebrand's is much more common than hemophilia in this breed.

Not being an expert I would ask your vet but I think the reason not eating is so detrimental is that dehydration is a medical emergency in pups and elderly dogs. Once he is healthy, and it sounds like he is on his way, I don't think there is any permanent damage. Sending drool from Indiana to your Jeffery.
