My basset--that I adopted from my son and his family only has ME --I don't have any other pets---Is this bad? She seems to be satisfied. But I do work the "graveyard shift" and have to sleep during the day.

How old is Bianca? A lot of bassets prefer to have a buddy--I got Stomps because Lightning had terrible separation anxiety. Having another dog made a world of difference with Lightning. Stomps, however, would be perfectly happy as an only dog. But Stomps is a rescue, and I think he spent the first two or three years of his life alone, whereas I got Lightning as a puppy and he never adjusted to being alone. I swore all this "Bassets are pack animals" was a lot of hooey, and I really resisted getting a second dog. But it was the best thing I ever did, and having two dogs is no harder than one (you will have double the costs, of course). If your girl is acting out while you're gone or asleep, you might consider getting her a friend.

our basset is alone on tuesday, wednesday and thursdays from 9am - 3pm when im at work and boyfriend is in bed.

We get a company called pet carers to come in and they take her out for 2 hours for £10 every wednesday to break the day up for her. i wish we could afford to do it on the other days but unfortanately cant.

hope this might help.

Snoopy is an only pet as she gets spoilt rotten - she loves it!!

I have two girls. One would not mind being the only dog. The other loves not being the only dog.

Go figure.

I believe bassets like the company of other dogs. It's in their nature. Every time my two girls go to sleep, the sleep next to each other.

Thanks so very much to all that replied to my question about having Bianca as an "only pet." I feel guilty at times for this, but actually, I think she's going to be just fine. She certainly loves all of my attention!! (is that okay?) She came to live with me in Dec. as a 2-year old. She had stayed with me several times before- for a month or 2, but this time-- it's for keeps-- since my son moved to CA and couldn't take her along. Finally, I told him I would keep her. He had a golden retriever that ended up at his mother in law's house.----I guess the main thing I really need to know is: Is there anything besides a Kong that I can leave at night for her to play with or when I'm not here. What are some "tricks" you long-time basset lovers know about this? I've noticed that she's a "counter surfer" and just remove food and other enticements from her reach. I've been a "silent observer" with this forum for some time, and have surely already learned many good things!!
I appreciate it a lot!
