The breeder we are getting our hound from said that he does NOT have a deep dewlap. Does this mean he doesnt have a saggy neck? i really like those hanging jowls. It is hard for us to tell exactly what he looks like since we have only seen a front photo, and a couple baby shots of him.
So 'Deep' dewlap means prominent/big and saggy in this circumstance? Or? Thanks.

I have seen the parents, but again not a good close look at the dewlap. The photos all have the show collar holding the chin up so it is hard to tell. Don't all bassets have dewla
p s? Lol!! Shouldn't they all have saggy lips?

All bassets should have dewlaps. When my dog has his head down
I can hide and warm my hands in between his. My last basset didn't have very "deep dewlaps" but he still looked very bassety, and so might yours. If you have opportunity you should visit him and see how he is, how his parents is and perhaps what conditions the puppies have grown up in. Mr. Runcible showing off his dewlaps. ![]() |

This is a very interesting conversation. I never knew what dewlaps were, and I never really paid attention to them on my dogs. But this thread made me realize that Stomps, who many people mistake for a beagle instead of a basset, has surprisingly impressive dewlaps. Lightning, who's much more of a typical-looking basset than Stomps, has fine dewlaps, but they're not as much fun to play with as Stomps. Kaira, thanks for the photo illustrating Mr. Runcible's impressive dewlaps. I've learned something new. And Barbie, your pup is very cute. Bassets definitely get baggier with age, but again, his parents would be the best indication of how he's going to turn out.

YES DEWLAPS ARE A BASSETS TRADEMARK RIGHT ALONG WITH THE LONG EARS AND BIG FEET.THE most expressive of breeds and most variable in expression, I truely love the basset. Dewlaps do very greatly from hound to hound . It's the same with the haw. I know there is a standard, but I find all the variations endearing. Oh see, now you got me started!!!!Ha Ha!!!! Dewlap
