I'm thinking about adopting a beagle. What do you think? I have a female (spayed) Basset, 6 months old and I'm thinking of getting a male (neutered) Beagle, 1 year old. He would come from a rescue in Newfoundland. I looked for a rescue for Bassets or Beagles around here and haven't had any luck. I've already been in touch with the rescue and they recommended "Blue" for my family. He would have to be delivered by plane. Not too sure about putting the little fellow through a plane ride. I would have to check with my husband (he's flown to Newfoundland before, I haven't), but I'm sure he would be on the plane less than an hour. We still have to sit down and have a "family talk" before we commited to this, but just thought maybe you guys could lend a few of your thoughts. Thanks.

I think beagles and bassets make great companions! We give a big paws up for the idea. I also truly believe that, if possible, dogs like having another dog around. This doesn't take away from the love they give us humans, but it's nice to have someone like yourself.

When I got Georgia I had her flown for Ohio to New Mexico. One stopover in Dallas and about a 5 hour fight. I was a nervous wreck from the time she got on the plane til I picked her up. She had no problems at all!

The only snag might be the temperatures at this time of year. Airlines have temperature guidelines about flying pets.

Lily gets along great with the Beagle next door. Gibbs on the other hand thinks that Sammy (the Beagle) is a rabbit and treats her as such (but he's a special case). I think a Beagle and a Basset are a great match.

We have a beagle that we rescued last year from a trash dump at the river and she and my bassets get along fine. She prefers our Golden retriever and she is a wonderful dog. I told my husband if he let me bring her home I would find her a good home, well that was 8 months ago so I think safe to say she is here to stay. I have a friend at work that had her beagle puppy flown and he did great. Good Luck!!!

I understand why you might be hesitant to fly your potential new family member, so I'll throw another flying success story out there. Scully flew to and from New Zealand, a grand total of 7 flights (3 to get to NZ from Toronto, and 4 to get her back home a year later). I was scared to death (and then some!), but she did absolutely fine. Good luck in your decision!!

Elmer's first "doggie friend" was a beagle. They had such fun together! Similar in temperaments, size and build. Also, one of our employees has a beagle who he brought over to "play" one day. Even after not being exposed to beagles for a year, they got along great. I think scent hounds get along naturally, but you should perhaps take your basset somewhere where she could play with a beagle before you commit.

(I should talk--we brought home a 4-month old boxer male to 2 2-year old bassets cold turkey). What were we thinking?????!!!!

I would not consider a dog/puppy I had not seen personally. FWIW Fischer the harrier cam from SF California a 6+ hour nonstop plane ride. The one hour ride to the airport was more harrowing for him than the plane ride.

{he only travelled in a crate in a car before and got car sick on the way to the airport}

Some time a caravan of sorts can be aranged to transport dogs
