I just read an article in the paper that per AKC registration the basset hound is the 28th most popular breed in the country. Yorkies, labs, rottweilers and even beagles beat out our beautiful bassets! Last year we were #27. Honestly, people in this country have no taste.....

I agree, but I'm always happy when I see statistics like that, and happy when bassets don't win at Westminster.
The more popular the breed, the more likely they are to be bred in puppy mills -and remember what happened to dalmations a few years ago when the Disney cartoon came out!

Correct, MurraysMom! Unfortunately, their popularity has devastated goldens and labs, both of which are wonderful breeds. But poor breeding practices to 'meet demand' have created rampant health issues in both breeds. I'd hate to see that happen to bassets, so I'm keeping mine a secret

I'm with murraysmom and Aruu.
I think this is great news! I'd actually been considering my houndie options for when a new doggie enters the house because I was concerned they'd become too popular. Although I agree about taste!
