Hello All - My hubby got me for Christmas my little baby girl Lilly, she is 8 weeks old now. I have never had a puppy before, so can anyone give me some advice, tips, experience, etc.
She is just the sweetest thing ever, she is so cuddly and playful (although she likes to chase after you and bite at your feet, which my 5 year old doesnt like much).

Mostly the thing I have having the most trouble with is housetraining, I take her outside every 30 minutes but she still goes everywhere.

from what ive been reading on this forum, bassetts are difficult to get housetrained. my little girl is just over 6 months old and she asked to go outside for the first time yesterday. of course today is completely different and shes already had an accident. hehehe

She is gorgeous!

Maya is 4 months old, and we have good and bad days with the housetraining-although we are now having more good days.
If she is playing in the living room with our other dog she forgets to let us know she needs outside-just like young children do as well when pottytraining.

She is not very good at going when out for a walk yet-she comes in and pees in the kitchen!

Enjoy her-they are fanastic dogs. Maya is our first basset, although we have had other breeds in the past.

Welcome! Bassets definitely are the best! Enjoy your puppy. My girl's name is Lily also.

(I tried to upload a picture of her, but it said "upload failed" I'm not so great at this inserting picture thing.)

Lily is adorable!!!

We didn't have too much trouble housetraining our two. I guess we got lucky. Sadie was 6 months old when we brought Max home and she was pretty much housetrained by then. Max picked up on it very fast, I think he learned a lot from Sadie. Sadie is now 11 months and Max is 6 months and they are both housetrained and have been for some time now. At first we made sure we put them out about every 20 minutes or so and any time they finished eating, drinking or just woke up. Gradually we were able to spread the 20 minutes out longer. Now Sadie tells us by scratching at the door or she will whine until we get up and let her out. Max hasn't indicated to us he needs to go out but I guess we let him out enough because he doesn't go in the house.

Housetraining Your Puppy
Quote:
A 12 wk puppy who is busy playing may need to urinate every 15-20 minutes, whereas a resting puppy might go for an hour, and a sleeping puppy can go 8 hours at night. Activity makes urine! Activity makes urine! Repeat this 10 times, slowly. This is a very important lesson for new puppy owners. [/b]

The optimal time to socialize your puppy is BEFORE it is three months old. Unfortunately, your pup needs to be confined indoors until then. This relatively short period of social isolation at such a crucial developmental time could all but ruin your puppy's temperament. Whereas dog-dog socialization may be put on temporary hold until your pup is old enough to go to puppy school and the dog park, we simply can not delay socialization with people. On the contrary, during the first month, while your pup is grounded at home, socializing with people becomes the Prime Puppy Directive. Without a doubt, raising and training a pup to be people-friendly is by far the single most important aspect of pet dog husbandry.

Capitalize on the time your pup is confined indoors by inviting people to your home. As a rule of thumb, your pup needs to socialize with at least 100 people before it is 3 months old. This is actually much easier than it sounds. Invite a different group of eight men each Sunday to watch sports on the television. (Generally, men are pretty easy to attract and train if you offer pizza and beer.) Each Monday invite a different group of eight women to watch Ally McBeal and Dateline. Catch up on all your outstanding social obligations by inviting family, friends and neighbors to weekly Puppy Parties. On another night of the week invite some neighborhood children. Above all, don't keep this puppy a secret. And of course, the great thing about socializing a young puppy is that it also does wonders for your own social life![/b]

Thanks for the advice, she is doing pretty good, better than I expected. She has problems at night, but that is probably my fault for not getting up and taking her outside.

Anyone have any adivce to get her to stop biting? She will run after your feet and bite and them, which is OK if you have shoes on, but if you are bare foot, it kinda hurts. I know she is just a puppy and will probably grow out of it, but is there anything I can do to deter it now?

There are a TON of posts filled with all kinds of good insight and advice about basset puppies (since they do have some unique quirks that you need to know in order to remain sane). I would suggest that you comb through older posts, especially those that have a topic that states someone is new or got a new puppy... and especially those with lots of replies.

Basically what you will find is this.
*Bassets can be a challenge to housetrain & YOU must be very diligent in training.
*They shed, drool & are incredibly sloppy drinkers. Keep a towel around, brush them often & don't aim for a spotless house.
*They're not like Labs or dogs that seem to live to please you. A nice way to put it is that they are "independent thinkers"
*What they "lack" in grace or manners or obedience they more than make up for in personality, humor & love.
*They get the 'crazies' where they run/bark/jump around like they are possessed by the devil. José was pretty scarey when he did this around4 mo old because he squirmed and bit... but it seems that all bassets have this. It's quite humorous to watch the nightly ritual of the dog running wild in the house, barking at seemingly nothing, only to lay back down 10 minutes later like nothing ever happened.

Good luck!
