This week marked Bogie's first snow. The first time it was barely a dusting, and after he realized that, he decided it would be okay to go outside, especially since under the evergreen bushes there was still grass. Between last night and this morning we've have a decent 4 inches or more. He has no problem peeing on the snow. As soon as I try to take him for a semi normal walk, he starts pulling and running. Normally Bogie is very good on a leash. He also keeps acting like he has to go out, but absolutely refuses to poo on the snow. I'm really not sure what to do about this. Should I just wait and he'll get used to it? (He will have to, because from now on there will be snow on the ground until March or April) Does anyone know a way to encourage him to go outside? I've been carrying treats outside with me in case he does go, to treat and celebrate and pet him a lot once he finally does go...but so far I haven't been given the opportunity.

Try shoveling a path to the spot in your yard that you want him to use. Take him there on his leash, use whatever phrase he's used to hearing for potty business, praise him when he goes.It's easier to keep one shoveled space cleaned up all winter than the whole yard! This has worked for me over the years with dogs who aren't used to pottying in the snow. Good luck!

We use the shoveled area also once the snow flies. Then I try to keep it clean picking up the frozen poop on a regular basis. Trust me he can't hold it forever. I think the snow and cold mess with their sense of smell.
When we take Bogie camping, peeing is no problem, but he often refuses to poop. Not the same smell, I guess in this foreign land. He has gone a couple of days, then nature takes over, and he goes. After that no more problems, and he goes back to his normal several times a day usually in the same area.

Bogie's temporary playmate looks quite a bit like my Yogi. Yogi's quite a bit redder and has a few other differences, but very close!

It's fun to see such a close match to him.

We don't get too much deep snow, but when we do, I also shovel a path & then a spot for poo pottying. it works well. Being so low to the ground, it has to be cold squatting your bum in the snow!

I used to shovel a path for Otie, too. Makes it real easy to find the poop, as an added bonus!! We used to call it the Otie Racetrack because he'd quick go and then run back in to the house. So far we haven't had a "big" snow here yet, so Shermie has no problem with snow.........yet
Otie could also hold it until the cows come home, because he hated to go out if it was cold, but the others are right, they can't hold out forever, and if they are well housetrained, they WILL go out eventually.
