Basset Pup Questions

How much should these little boys eat? Jackson is 14 weeks and eats like a horse BUT does not show much interest in lunch - only breakfast and supper. I think its because the other dogs do not get lunch and he does not like to eat alone - peer pressure etc.
Should he really have doubled his weight in the last four weeks?? He was 6 kilos when he arrived and is now 12 and bit.

So - given question A - just how much pupppy-poo can a puppy produce ?

And.... how far is too far for a pup to walk - I'm very aware I do not want to over walk and pver stress joints - but how far? 10 mins? 20? 30? any ideas or thoughts?

I measure Brunos food with my hands, they are small so he doesnt get a whole heckuva lotta food but its enough. For breakfast he gets approx 2 cups and 1 pouch of wet food mixed and then he only gets 1 cup at lunch and another 2 for dinner. Bruno also got very big in the two wks that we have had him. I def think he double his weight. I also walk him about 3-4 blocks after hes done eating so that way we dont have accidents in the house. I takes about 20 minutes because hes so stubborn about his leash . He wants to go whereever I dont want him to go...LOL....

But he and Elmer both eat Hills Science Diet. No frito smell here, either. Just smelly feet and ears sometimes.

and erm... I would have expected to see some adult teeth signs by now... and there are none... am I premature in my expectations?

There is no absolute correct answer and it is somewhat of a moving target. What the dog required last week will be different from next week. On a bag of food there should be a quideline of how much to feed based on the weight on the age of the dog. This of course is only a guideline. Keep in mind however it is in the manufactures interest to sell more food. The only way to judge if you are over or underfeeding is ascess the pups body condition.

Puppies have a short digestive tract so in general do not process the food they eat as thoroughly and a higher metablism requiring more food which in the end mean more excrement than from an adult. That said an abnormally high level could be a sign of overfeeding or a dog food that is not highly digestable.

If we are talking walking then from and orthopeadic point it would be damn near impossible to over stress the joint. That would require trauma which would only occur from an activity like jumping. As with any exercise program start short and work up to longer distance. let your pup activity and fitness level be your guide.

Also of note it is not uncommon not to find a whole lot of signs of teething other than an increase in chewing behaviors.

My Basset pup, Sherman, is now almost 6 months old, and he lost his puppy teeth when he was about 4 1/2 to 5 months old. When he was a about 14 weeks old, he didn't eat much for lunch either, but i had his food available for him at all times, which might be a problem with other dogs in the household. He pooped a lot too, maybe six times a day!! I'm sure your little one is doing just fine. He looks wonderful in the pictures.
