Dudley has been turning into a serious beer hound lately!
Overall, he can be trusted around food and drink on the coffee table. But since the start of this year's NFL season, I can't leave a glass of beer unnattended where he can reach it. If it's full, he'll try to just get a slurp or two without knocking the glass over, but if it's half-full or less, he just knocks it over and drinks as much as he can before he gets caught! He pretty much ignores if I have a bottle or can, but he can't resist beer in a mug or pint glass. He also seems to be extra-motivated if I have imported or expensive domestic (Guiness, Bass Ale, Sam Adams) and not very into your average Bud or Miller. This is dang distracting when I'm trying to watch football! And one of my friends has started calling him "Sudsley"! I keep trying to get a pic, but have yet to succeed. Anybody else have a hound that likes beer? I guess I should add that he's never been able to get more than 1/2 a beer. I'm being more careful now, I don't want my dog to be the town drunk! |

I think we may need to start a basset AA group. :P
Jackie is a civilized hound, she turns her nose at beer but will gladly steal your wine if you are not looking. I found this out the hard way the other week when we had guests for dinner and she tipped over my glass of white zin and proceeded to help herself!

Had to de-lurk for this one! OUR Dudley used to love to steal fine ales from my pint glass as well, hence the inspiration for the avatar. Didn't always agree with his tummy, but compared to socks....

A neighbor was having a party a few years back & I came outside to find a couple guys tilting their beer bottles through the fence & Sadie & Spencer were both lapping it up. I had to admit it was comical, but I brought them both in. I didn't think it would take too much to get a 50 lb dog drunk, and by the way the guys were laughing, they would have kept on till it happened!

Maybe you should quit drinking beer out of a glass and just drink out of the can!
George will lap up some beer if it's offered but I think he only does it to be polite. He's really not interested. Gigi, on the other hand, wants whatever you've got. She doesn't even care what it is.

Ruby doesn't like beer; it makes her sneeze. She can be the designated driver!
We were at SeaWorld today and among other things and saw Shamu. Ruby looks so much like Shamu. Ruby has a new nickname: ShamRU! Happy day tomorrow! Janice and little Ruby

That's comical, but could be tragic. Glad you brought them in. I would think it wouldnt take too much alcohol to injure a 50 pound dog either. I think I'd be getting a peice of plyboard to apply to that neighbors side of the fence!

Growing up, we had a beagle mix named Fleagle and during one cookout we discovered that she was knocking over beer-cans and drinking the contents. We immediately removed her from the scene but that night, Boy! did she get sick! There were no night-time vets in those days so we just kept getting her to drink water but she would throw that up until the next day when the vet just got an IV line into her and she could be re-hydrated. From then on we had to lock her in the house during parties and cookouts.
