Didja ever see those yellow evidence flags sticking in the ground on TV? I bought about 100 of them (100 min) to use as markers in the yard showing the spot of the deed. Since we are the only ones using our backyard ..... every couple of days we go around looking for the flags with our doggy doodoo bag. We do the pickup and then pull the flag. Neat system (no pun intended).

Each time the pup went out and we suspected it was time for the deed we waved the flag and let her sniff it. Then if the deed was completed we praised her and let her sniff the flag again just before we planted it. I hoped that soon the waving and sniffing of the yellow flag might prompt her urge. Guess what? It did!

Now we use reasonable time intervals for her age, take her out and bingo! She does the deed! I hope this helps some of you who are still in the training phase. Good luck ...

We pick up daily because otherwise we'd be overrun with flies.

Daily .... I agree with you. We should doo it immediately ..... but for reasons not disclosed here I can't and she is often not immediately available. You make a very good point though ..... I hope my post is not read as encouragement to delay the responsibility of pet owners. My intent was to relate the concept of 'Canine Impulse Association' and one possible application regardless of time intervals.

Thumbs down

I think it is a clever way of training and teaching your dog where and when to go. Whatever works for you and your dog...

We never pick up after Moe and Tally. The yard is just too darn big and we'd never find even half of the piles. Luckily, many times they go in one of my many perrenial gardens. Once the leaves fall we don't need to worry about it anyway... they prefer to go in the woods when they can finally see where are stepping.

Ernest never goes in the back yard, so we just pick up on walks.

We are mean, but we also have really steep steps down to our garden, so he can only go when escorted down the driveway.

Poor basset, always controlled by his people.
