Depression?

Hi everyone!
I am new to the forum.
I have an 8 year old F basset named Roxy and I am worried about her and need advice. About two weeks ago we had to put our other dog, Midget, (cocker/yorkie mix) down after 13 long years.
She was Roxies mentor/friend/lead dog.
Ever since that fatefull day Roxie seems to be getting very depressed. She is used to eating twice a day but lately she has stopped eating in the morning. In the evening she hesitates to eat but eventually does. She does have times of sporadic energy but seems more and more sad.

Unfortunatly, we are not in a position to get another companion for her. Should I think of finding her a home with other Bassets or do you think she will come out of it. She was very co-dependent of Midget.

Sorry for the long first post

I would appreciate any and all advice or help.

I definately think it is depression. It is like losing your spouse or best friend. She may not want another dog. See if you can take her for play dates, or doggy day care, maybe that will be enough so she's not so lonely. Hope that helps.

George did the same thing when Rosie died. He was the boss and she was the follower in that case, but he missed her horribly after she died. It was weeks before he was back to normal -- and then he decided he really likes being an only and getting all the attention and treats to himself. LOL Just give her lots of loving and hugs and attention and she'll get over it eventually. She's in mourning, but it will pass.

So sorry for your loss of Midget.Murray mourned for his companion Hansel for a few weeks. Extra car rides and walks seemed to help him perk up during that time. You are more important to her than another basset would be, believe me, and losing her home with you, especially now, would be catastrophic. Valerie is right, she's in mourning but it will pass.

Thanks for the help.
We have been giving her extra attention lately, and she seems to perk up then. She is one of the sweetest dogs I know and I want her to be happy.

Sorry for your lost.

Keep her entertain, I'd say. Toys, chews, treats, trip to the park and let her meet other dogs.
When you are ready and she is ready, you can adopt another dog.

I hope the best for both of you.

I am very sorry for your loss. Our retreiver went through a similar mourning when our 10 year old cocker spaniel died. We gave him extra attention and eventually did get him another companion and he is wonderful now.
