Introducing my pup to short walks

Any advice on how to get my pup to walk with me on a leash?

I'd like to start taking her for very short walks, just around the block for now. But I put the leash on her, take her outside, and she just sits there looking at me like "Umm...no, not happening lady."

Gosh she's cute, but so stubborn.

LOL! Welcome to the world of bassets. When Barney was a pup he would do the same thing...if I could finally get him out of the yard, he would flat basset on the roadside, where people would stop and want to help, thinking he was dying. Treats did help some.

Yep PB did the same & I remember thinking what dog doesn't want to go for a walk?!! But for what its worth we now run 5Ks! She's still a better runner than a walker. Good luck you'll make it.

I dunno, I just slip the leash on and talk to them and encourage them to follow me.

Can't say I ever had a problem with this - like Soundtrack I just put on the leash and start walking. Do you have a friend with a dog that could walk with you? That should help getting them started at least - they will soon be dragging you to walk.

As soon as I say the word walk he is away to fetch his leash. He is more of a runner and sniffer than a walker x

cooper loves going out, but 2 or 3 mins into walking he sits down to admire the view or let's everyone pass us, then we walk, then he has a sit down to take in the fresh air, appreciate the little things then walk...

I chat to him and try to coax him but he really knows its his walk lol in our puppy obedience class he would get a lot of 'Awws' when he just sat there instead of walking the whole length of the room just to go back again... They're too smart!

Another thing he loves to do is act all bashful and insanely adorable when he somehow knows another dog owner has treats. We don't need to give him lunch he gets that many!

Eight weeks is pretty young so I'd let her tell you how far she wants to go. At that age I'm with Esther get a wagon if you fancy taking her for longer walks.
