The one thing!

So I'm guessing that every basset (or dog for that matter) has that one thing or food that will literally wake them up from a dead sleep. Arthur? His is CHEESE. He will be sound asleep at the other end of the house in my son's room and as soon as I open the bag of shredded cheese, I hear the jing-jang-jangling of his tags...and here he comes! :) In fact, we also use the cheese to get him off of our bed at night when he's in one of our spots (it works like a charm!) because he just can't resist it.

One of the funniest stories of him and cheese is that one time, after we'd had Arthur for just a few weeks, my son left his chair pushed away from the dining room table. Arthur, being a nimble basset, quickly scaled the chair. His basset snout passed over the chicken nuggets and made a bee line to the slices of...cheese. Yep! He stole the cheese over chicken nuggets! That's when I realized just how much he loved cheese. American, cheddar, parmesan, romano, mozzarella...it doesn't really matter to him! LOL :D

Oh yes - cheese! Well I remember bringing one of our girls home from the vets after a C.Section with her puppies. She managed to walk out of the vets but between then and arriving home, 'crashed'. She was safe and with me = let go. I had to carry her indoors (all 65+ lbs of her) on sheet ice (it was Dec 24) which was okay as I could get her settled into the whelping box and go back for the pups snug in their box in the car and latch them all onto her while she was out of it. Then I started to get a tad concerned about how out of it she was so went for the cheese. That brought her round!!!

Right now, I have dried fish treats in a plastic tub and the moment I open it and they hear it, they are there - fast asleep previously!

If I go to the fridge for cheese we all arrive at the same time, go for anything else they wait to see what it is!

I haven't really figured out what "One Thing" is Hoss' favorite yet. I am still learning a lot about him. He loves just about everything I give him, freeze dried liver treats, puppy biscuits, doggy jerkey, hooves, antlers, the list goes on. My Mia (cane corso/pit mix) who is 4 will come from the other room when she hears us tapping a spoon on the rim of a sour cream container. We started giving her the sour cream spoon to lick a long time ago. Now when we use sour cream and we are cleaning up after dinner, she hears the sound of us getting the excess sour cream off the spoon, she comes running for her treat. Hoss likes it too, but I don't think he's gotten the routine down yet. LOL

Noba goes nuts for cheese, hot dogs and especially slim jims... But he's odd at times too... He LOVES strawberries. I offered him a piece of turkey lunchmeat once and a strawberry at the same time, he chose the strawberry over the meat?!?!

Maddie is so nuts about cheese, we can't even say 'cheese' in our house - we say 'cha' instead. "do you want mac and cha with dinner?" LOL.

Mine will pretty much respond to ATBDG (anything but dog food) but for some reason, both go insane for fruit, especially melon and bananas. They just get down right obnoxious... Oh, and of course.... bacon.. but who ( hound & people alike) don't love bacon!

Molly will get up from a dead sleep for ANY food-related sound or smell. Like several others have mentioned, any kind of plastic packaging that sounds like her treat bag will get her attention, along with the sound of the fridge door opening or any dishes clanking. The other night, she sat up and started licking her lips just because my husband walked into the kitchen. She didn't even know what he was going to get, but she was ready!

My daughter gave Barney a jar of homemade treats...now this is the dog who I would have to trick into letting me cut ONE nail a day and this took alot of cunning on my part....since the treats have arrived I can now get 5 or 6 at a time....these are really high value...bacon, a little bacon grease, oatmeal, beef broth, cheese, grilled steak spice and flour to hold together....probably not very healthy for him but oh, what a difference in his nails....and yes, Barney licks his lips when he wants me to get him one...hard to resist but these are for only special occasions.

recipe for treats for nail cutting....

2 cups oatmeal. 6 crisp bacon slices crunched up. Bacon grease from bacon..mix with oatmeal. 1 cup beef broth, 1/4 cup any shredded cheese and couple of shakes of grilled steak spice and/or garlic powder. Add enough flour ( I use 1 cup) to hold together. Can be rolled out and cut or I just drop small balls on cookie sheet and smash with bottom of glass. Cook 350 for at least 30 minutes....till hard. By far his favorite...gotta be the bacon & grease.
