We have run into a couple of bigger hounds at the waddles over the years. The first year we had one that was essentially just a double-sized hound - same body proportions, leg shortness, etc., just twice the size on everything. His name was Goomba and he was a red and white. The other one was last year's waddle. He was a very big basset, 100+ lbs., but not an ounce of fat on him - not sure it was 100% basset hound but he fit right in. He made our Layla (65 pound porker that she is) look petite.
Either way, like a couple of others have said - basset houndiness is all in the attitude of the dog, unless you plan on showing the dog it doesn't really matter whether they would be judged to be a hound or not. Monty looks good to me.

He is disporportionate(sorry about the spelling) the legs being a bit longer leaves a lot of air under him the body filled out but the legs make him look tall.Ears are shorter than should be..... but all in all who cares you love him .He is not one to follow the standard but not all do,he may have been poorly bred. Some people think importing gigantic european bassets are cool but sometimes the genes do not mix well. As long as you love him he is perfect as he is,I can see why you were curious though

My most recent litter has the largest variation in size I've ever seen. They will be a year old Jan 25. The smallest, Xena, is currently 35 lbs. The largest, Dexter, is around 80 lbs - and not the least bit fat. He's also over the height limit, he's going to be huge!

Here is Dexter, the huge pup, next to his aunt Deela.

Oh, see I thought Deela was small but it's just that she's next to behemoth hound, Dexter! Mr. Pea was on the small size, at his heaviest he maybe weighed 45 lbs. He was not as food crazy as some hounds I've known so I was lucky in not having to watch his weight.

These posts made me laugh. Especially the picture from soundtrack.
All cuties, even if some of them are gigantic.
