I know most of the time we are concerned wtih OVERweight lol but I am thinking my Roscoe may be too skinny? He just turned 1 and hes around 40 lbs. I feed him 2x a day at least one cup each feeding of Nutro Ultra. And he def doesnt lack for a few healthy tablescraps and treats thru the day. He was the runt of the litter so maybe that will always make him small? My other pup Reese who also is 1, is around 45-50 lbs but she is also much longer than him. I can see the indention where the ribs start, he doesnt "look" undernurished but hes not one of these big chunky lover boys I see on here. Any thoughts?

It's normal for young males to be skinny. And it's better for them to be on the lean side. Unless your vet thinks he's underweight I wouldn't worry.

ours (female) is just over a year (15mos) and weighs around 38 pounds.

Her male littermate weighs about the same.

The basset rescue told us that some bassets are just small....

i'm 2 1/2 yrs old and 40 lbs. i'm a skinny young boy too. i was pretty runty in my litter of 9 too.

thought i'd post some pics so then u see you're not alone! i can look pretty skinny depending on the camera angle. but my vet and orthopod says i'm at a good weight and don't need to gain.

Soundtrack you said it's normal for young males to be skinny, did you mean they might get more robust with age? Harvey is quite heavy (11months and about 60lb) but he looks very skinny compared to lot's of basset pics I've seen on here for example. Just wondering..

they can gain girth and muscle mass up to the age of 3-4 years, on the girth I am talking about the rib cage expanding. Which can make them look heavier or skinnier than they actually are

Fact is some lines of Bassets are slow maturing, while others are so-called 'fliers' and pretty much bodied up at quite a young age. I had a male here who between around 1 and almost 2, looked like 2 boards clapped together. As I wanted to show him, I was nearly ready to give up as despite having him out at 6 months, besides the other puppies in his class (who were huge!!) he looked - well let's say he stood down the line I pulled him and waited, and hoped. In good time, he blossomed, bodied up and looked the part. He came from a breeding I'd not done before and it was obvious that his American Ch. sire came from a slow-maturing line. And actually at least he remained sound - even if I had to wait

Provided your lad is otherwise healthy, with no obvious problems, I'd suggest he will probably be one who looks better later on, much as what he will be, is mainly all in his genes.

Runts often catch up later on too.

ps Yes, it's more often the males who take their time, than the girls. My boy's sister was far more 'there' than he was and their sister who I'd sold was Top Basset puppy (UK) for that year.

I've known them to take up to 5 years to fully fill out.

Or even more. Sailor, at 9 1/2, looks much more substantial than he did as a young dog, and he is in no way fat.

Ya know, I, too, look more substantial than I did when I was younger Elliot weighed 35 pounds when I brought him home from the pound in May. He looked awful. He is now 50 pounds and the vet said he is perfect. He is 4 years old.
