Well we've been Basset parents now for nearly a week, we're tired and smelly and our floors are covered in watery ear trails but we couldn't be anymore in love with him!
![]() Cooper came pretty much house trained (at 8 weeks old he's a prodigy) however at nights it's hard for him to stay settled - We're probably expecting a bit too much too early but I wanted to know if anyone had any tips? He can sleep for 3 hours at a time before he wakes up - this is when I get up to bring him outside for emptying, yay... but when he comes back in he's nowhere near tired anymore. We also make sure before bed he's super exhausted & has done as much of his business as he can do then. His bed is beside ours upstairs and fenced off to stop him going on solo midnight adventures! With the Christmas tree up downstairs there's nowhere else we can really leave him unattended at nights for him to stress out and hurt himself. We don't have a crate and really didn't want to, especially as we've already started a routine. I'm sure our neighbours are loving us with all the puppy noises but one thing we LOVE is his snoring!! It's like a fog horn, he really lets go. The other day he conked out and was dreaming while his eyes were open - absolutely terrifying & weirdly cute, here's a video of it! Cooper loves getting his photo taken (we have a flickerbook of his whole first week) so here's more of the little cutie ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cooper sleep diving as I type this post!

What a cute boy!! Jackson sometimes still gets excited after a late night pee break, what I do to help him to remember that it is quiet time, not play time is I keep him on his leash and bring him on it, all the way upstairs to our bedroom and show him his bed. Then he remembers what he's supposed to be doing- resting, not playing, or howling, or running. He's a little older, though.

Bassets and Christmas trees aren't usually safe together unsupervised. It's wise to keep them apart. I've had bassets for over 30 years and have adjusted to only having 3 foot tall trees placed 5 feet above the ground minimum.

Unfortunately I think this is our last year with our tree, which we just bought days before Cooper arrived lol He's only near the tree when I'm with him, I dread to think what would happen if he had that all to himself
