Barking in the Park

Hello everyone,

I've been reading the forums for a while now and I have learned quite a lot about bassets. After reading some threads over barking, I've decided to post this and ask for some help of my own:

I'm having some trouble with Bernie when we go to the dog park. He gets so excited and wants to play with everyone which leads non-stop barking. I know that bassets are quite vocal (as I've learned living with him in the past year), and I know he just wants to play, but he is never this loud at home and I'm also afraid that although most of the dog owners are OK with him barking, to some this is not acceptable play behavior.

Does anyone have any good training tips on how to help minimize/stop the barking in the park?

Welcome! I don't really have any tips on this, but that is pretty funny. Hubert's favorite thing to do at the dog park is sit at the gate and bark at people jogging by.

You figure out an invention to stop a basset from barking when excited, you'd make a mint around here. I saw one at an agility course once, and he barked all the way through, kind of in time to the slalom poles he hit. It was wild.

For mine barking is part of the play. I wouldn't dream of stopping them.

Ellie barks when she wants to play (with Jake or us lowly humans) Jake starts to howl... can't bring myself to stop them!

totally agree! the problem is the other dog owners not the dog.

I love it when Page and Mabel go at it barking - I just wish I had a clue to what they were saying so I could be in on the fun.

When out on a walk the only time they bark is when they are on chase of a rabbit or coyote.

emma loves barkin at other dogs usually lettin folks know when a new dog arrives or to try and get the other dogs runnin so she can chase them. i think it annoys some of the other owners cause she usually is the loudest dog there but i just shrug it off cause she is fairly quiet at home stickin to mainly grunts and whines to get my attention.

i will share this today she was chasin one of her friends and had one of those mini tennis balls in her mouth all the while barkin up a storm in full chase mode. it was the funniest thing ever couldnt decide who would start chokin first emma with the ball in her mouth or me laughin at her.

Donut is generally quiet. At the dog park she loves to go from bench to bench. Just checking to see if the people sitting on those benches might have a sandwich to share.

She loves to chase a couple of friends...when they get going, she barks/talks the entire time.

That's funny because I've had this pup for 4 days now and she's only barked once - when she was trying to get my son to play with her.

It does seem to be part of play!
