I guess I should start with Hello! I've been a lurker for a while & signed up a few days ago to make it all official! My partner & I are collecting our first Basset Hound - who we've named Cooper! on the 12th of December! (19 days, how will I cope!?) when he will be 8 weeks old. It feels like we've been researching this breed for years & I feel semi qualified to be a vet! So we just decided to take the plunge and become proud pets of a basset!
We live just outside of Belfast in Northern Ireland and aside from stalking, Basset's are a rare sight here! Anyway, what we're a little anxious about is there are just so little of this breed here I don't think a groomer would really know what to look for so we'd like to take over a bit of this responsibility! From previously owning a Shih tzu, we don't anticipate anywhere near as much grooming as what she needed & were wondering if this Furminator is as awesome as it appears? With the basset having short hair, would it really be as affective as those pictures show? It looks a bit harsh - does anyone here use them? What we've learnt is the main grooming points seem to be the ears, eyes and nails - is there anything else we should pay extra attention to? Obviously having 19 days and 10 minutes until we pick up Cooper we're so excited but we're worrying ourselves over every little detail We really look forward to posting in this Bassey community! Here's some pictures of little Cooper! ![]() His Mummy & Daddy! ![]() Daddy & cooper ![]() Taken 2 days ago ![]() He's the biggest of his litter (his poor poor mother ) and loves to terrorise his siblings, here's a video of him too! Hello and welcome! I'm a relative newbie too but this is a great place and the people are full of knowledge.
I would say that you have it spot on with the grooming expectations - and would just add to keep the folds in his face/neck clean as well. I just use baby wipes on Boris and they do the job well. I would strongly suggest getting the little fella used to having his ears, nails, folds touched from day 1. These are notoriously stubborn dogs and so exposure to all of this from the beginning is a must. Otherwise, you'll have a dog that runs for the hills later on ![]() Good luck - I'm very jealous! Seems like only yesterday I bought my boy home - but that was 6 years ago now. Take loads of pics as in a year or so you'll never believe how small he once was!

Thanks for the reply deano and the tips!
Boris is very handsome! Can't wait to get stuck in, Cooper's like a wee wiggly ball of dough right now. I think I'll have a flickerbook of his life in a week, he'll be the most photographed dog in northern ireland :PHow are they when starting to go out for walks? I can imagine their noses must stop at everything for a sniff? |

The boot looks just the right size for one anyway but I didn't want to assume it would be like Tetris :P

Welcome Cooper and family. We love the furminator and don't forget to brush the teeth.
