I have 2 new berry coloured sofas coming soon, and am agonizing over what kind of covers to get to protect them! The dog will be easy; the cat is the concern.

I can't imagine my home without a basset, but I'm a little strange. Just remember they are not your usual dog, they're a hound, don't give up on training & become one of those owners who never let them off lead. If you get a pup just remember little exercise, no heavy play & remember the 5 minute a month rule. There's no dog like them for charm, companionship & every morning I come down to feed them the look on their face just cheers me up every time. Only draw back they can be bloody expensive, so do your research well & don't fall for what you want to hear.

As far as protecting the furniture... Cat, I can't help with. However, last year I bought new furniture for the family room. At the same time, I bought flat bed sheets as close to the color of the furniture I could find. (two sets to rotate for washing). I put the sheets on the seats to protect them from dirt/mud (tracked in) and hair. Percale sheets seem to be good, since you can wisk off the hair. Plus, if you are having "company" and you want to "look good" you can tear those sheet off in no time. I have learned to accept the covers for day to day and it really saves the furniture!

My furniture is fine. I got Norman at 15 months and had been trained not to get on furniture and I continued this. the few times tha he has gotten up on the sofa I correted with an off. However I have to drag his bedding into what ever room I am in.

I need to get something thicker than a sheet, although it is a good idea. I may have to get 2 sets of covers and have my sister sew them together for each piece; the sofas are huge, and I need to protect them well from the cat, who gets on furniture by digging in her claws and pulling herself up.
And no, I don't want slipcovers; I want something I can quickly remove for company, that I can pop in the washer. I tell my cat she is very fortunate; other people would give her away or have her declawed.

I wonder if something like this would help. It looks quicker to put on and take off than a slipcover, but it leaves some areas exposed.

These would be great, but they're too small. I may get 2 for each sofa and have my sister modify them...
