Yes we're very familiar with bloat! We're also familiar with the no-stairs and no jumping off stuff rule since they're both important for Danes too. I didn't realize how many of the rules were the same so this will be easier than I thought! We have a crate but I wanted him to sleep with us last night, we're suckers for that.

Don't you just love those 'old eyes' in that baby face. Who can believe Bassets are stupid. That face just oozes 'knowing'.
Start clipping back those nails - I use human toe clippers. If you start now, it will be less of a fight as he gets older. Start with the back nails first and go slow. Try this when he's sleepy (!?) in the evening. Sit with him and just touch his legs and feet first. If he doesn't resist, introduce the clippers. It's worth doing when they are young as they will need attention once a week. We have an evening set aside for ears and nails

Aw, what a sweet baby. I wish we had started clipping Maddies nails from day 1 - we have to take her to have it done now, and it's a struggle getting her nails short.
I do recommend crate training. We did with Maddie for the first year, and she's never done things like counter surf, get in the trash, chew things and furniture, nor is she food driven to steal food, even in a child's hand.

What a great photo of the kid and puppy! Definitely a Keeper!
Over the years, I have been peed on a time or two... When they "signal" they want out, respond FAST! Even if it is the middle of the night! I have acquired the "skill" of basically sleep-walking Ellie outside and back to bed... only issue, now the cold rainy whether... definitely wakes you up when you step outside in the cold rain in a t-shirt and panties! (Damn I hate winter is coming!) Fortunately, most nights, she sleeps thru the night, however, when she wakes me up ( via sitting on my head) I need to pay attention! She is serious and means business! Trust me, that lessens and it will get much better and the midnight runs become fewer! Husbands dog??? Yeah, mine too, when it comes time to spoil them rotten! Middle of the night potty trips, my dog. Cleaning up "accidents", my dog. Don't get me wrong, daddy adores his dogs, he is just the "soft" parent . And they know it and play on his "weakness"!
