On the really frigid days here, it's not the body that's the problem but the feet and ears. We occasionally have days where just going from the house to the car freezes their feet so much they literally can't walk. So for my guys, barring special circumstances, if it's too cold for them to go out without a coat, it's too cold to go out period.

we just bought these, on sale for $16 each, they are great as they are waterproof on top but we also tend not to use coats here. They make us laugh too hard when they are on.

Product Listing | Greenhawk

we nearly bought the orange and yellow striped one, but it really would have made them look like hotdogs

My comments about no coats for the Basset obviously relate to the breed as a whole. They should have a weather-proof coat, naturally. Obviously there may well be some conditions (eg thyroidism and old age) where a coat might be needed.

We sold a puppy whose owners took him up to Hudsons Bay where they taught for several years. He grew a much thicker coat on his tummy, and feet (Hobbit!!) to counter the cold up there. But he wore no external coat, and survived.

I just don't hold with all this dressing up that some people feel is necessary - for this Breed.
so don't dress yours in one. see how easy that is?

guess what. It's ok for others to do something you don't agree with...

if you want your dog in a coat buy a coat.
if you don't... don't buy one.
Nothing good comes from being all Judgey McJudgerson about something as innocuous as this.

carry on...

It didn't seem judgemental to me, just explaining her opinion.

Sorry for the very late response but been ill last week.

Well I just want to say a huge thanks to each and every one of you members for taking the time to answer my question, brilliant informative answers.

I do not want Derek dressed up for the sake of it so I may buy him a thin waterproof rain coat for those UK days when it just rains and rains as he goes a bit loopy when he is soaking wet, other than that I think I will just keep him as nature intended him to be, blooming cold but bloody cute!!
