Default I know i'm not a Basset, but I'm Barkley

Eclair and Ethel have a new brother. His name is Barkley, he joined the family from a shelter on Friday. He is a 2 year old Golden/Lab mix. He's a super sweet dog, needs to refresh some manners from being wild in a kennel for the past several months, but has really started to settle down in just 3 days.

Ethel loves him, plays for hours. Eclair is warming up, likes to join in on the play, but once Barkley uses his paws in play she snarls and grumbles and puts him in his place. I never thought of Eclair as the Alpha, but I guess she is now.

Poor guy has a itchy rash on his tail. He had his vet appointment yeterday and they did testing on it. They think it is either a nervous reaction to the stress and insanity at the shelter, or an alergy. He's got a course of antibitotics and cortisone tablets for a couple weeks to see how we progress, and maybe do some future allergy testing.

This poor guy had so much pent up energy that he ran round and round our fenced acre for hours Friday afternoon, I kept imagining him yelling FREEDOM like Mel Gibson! He also must have had water restriction, because he emptied out our 5 gallon automatic water bubbler, mostly on the floor! He has since started drinking like a normal golden, still mostly on the floor but in normal quantities!

Here's a pic, not the greatest!

Awww, congrats! Barkley is a cutie and it sounds like he is already living it up in his new home! I'm sure all of you will be settled in together in no time!

Hair loss on his tail was one of the first signs of hypothyroidism that Harley showed. Judging by Barkley's activity level that's probably not it, though :P

yes our Collie has hypothyroidism. There was no hail loss, just itch rash under his hair. They shaved it and scraped it, it is not fungus, bugs, fleas etc....

What a beautiful and lucky dog. My favorite dogs next to bassets and beagles are the goldens. They are such a gentle and loyal breed. Congratulations!

Congrats to you and Barkley!!!!!

He has a very handsome face. I love the energy these dogs have. We have Olly (Lab, (8 months old) who keeps Monty company, it's great fun watching Olly tearing around and Monty desperately trying to catch him.

I hope his skin clears up soon

Oh congrats! I grew up with a golden/lab mix and today it is still my favorite breed/doggie. Don't tell Fred though, he's under the impression he's my one and only true LOVE! Enjoy! If not, send him my way I'll love the snot out of him
